This is the inside of an arborea flower. In the Preissel book it says arborea is the only brug with a fuzzy style. I wanted to show that but I guess I need to disect the bloom to see the style. Anyhoo ... you can see it's pretty furry inside there.
A closer view
Sue, have you ever got yours to pollinate? Mine did nothing on it's own or with my help last year. Still hoping that this season I will get some seed.
I got a pod by self pollinating ... then the pod broke off when I brought it out and the wind knocked it over. I planted the seeds but nuthin germinated. I haven't been able to get any sang pollen to take. I have some buds now on the arborea but my sang keeps dropping her buds.
I've never even had buds on a sang. Gave my last one to Doc. If anyone can get it to bloom, he can.
Just my luck! I just ordered a pack of Brugmansia sanguinea seeds this week as the blooms were so pretty! I'll still give it a whirl though.
I have kept a couple, but inside all the time. Summer is too hot and humid.
That is what I may have to do,I hope I can see it bloom.
Correct me if I am wrong Shirley,I think our seeds came from Liz at the same time??
I could not believe how tall yours was, compared to mine,I just looked she looks happy.;0)
I actually grew one from seed a couple years ago and it bloomed in Dec. before we had any frost. Unfortunately it made such an ugly bush where I had it planted, my husband insisted that I take it out. I didn't have any luck rooting cuttings from it. I hope to grow another this year. Where I live, I have to have it in the shade in the summer.
jerodsmom:
You should have relocated the sang instead of discarding it as I think you did. Sanguineas do not respond to propagating by cuttings. I've tried numerous times without success. Last summer I consulted with a large grower in Santa Barbara on how they grew their sangs. I was told they were all grown from seed, as THEY could not root cuttings either. I have a handful of seedlings that are now a year old. They're growing in 5-gallon pots. Maybe this spring or summer they'll bloom. Remember that the native habitat of these brugs is the cool slopes of the Andes, so they do not like to be in the sun on hot summer days. Plant them in a protected, shady area where the moisture is high. I have 2 in my garden and they bloom just fine here in the San Fernando Valley (LA area). The caterpillars just LOVE the fuzzy leaves.
Here is a photo taken this past summer in my backyard brug heaven.
Mainfrog yours is sure pretty!
Well, you can actually root sangs, I have done it quite easily this last season. In years past I have even rooted some in water. In fact I just sent CC one that I had rooted. It had been in a 4 inch pot for several months and even had a bud on it! I have no trouble rooting Arborea also. I have pods on it now from a cross with a yellow sang. I have harvested pods crossed to my orange sang and my pink vulcanicola.
It could be that they need the cool weather I have here.
I have also rooted Sangs, although some didn't make it,most did and then I had to find homes for them...
And the sang's kell sent me are doing well, and it stll has a bud,Wish my big sang had a bud cause the arborea has a bud
Mainfrog is that a seed grown brug in the photo? It looks like it's all red... no yellow.
I would be happy just to get a couple of blooms on mine so I could see what it looks like. After that I don't think it would break my heart if it died. I want the pollen but I don't think I have the patience to wait 9 months for seed pods to ripen... unless it decided to bloom continuously!
Glad for the information on the Sang's preferences for shade on hot days & moisture! If it's pickier than the other brugs, can it still be cross pollinated successfully I wonder? Thanks, Mainfrog!
I'm confused if there are two varieties, too. One that is all red and another that has the yellow base? Are there doubles in this particular family? (Thought I'd get all my questions out at one time ~ lol!)
I don't think there are any double sangs but there are some different colors. There's an all yellow one and even one that is supposed to have lilac hues.
Sanguinea can only crossed with other sangs, arborea, vaulcanicola, or flava brugs. Sanguinea x Arborea = x flava (a hybrid of the two species). Here's a gallery of some of the colors http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/brugmansia_sanguinea.htm
I was going to post pictures of mine but I see they are on ABADS site you just linked to Sue, of my orange sang. LOL. See that huge trunk? It took Tom and T hours over New Years to dig that root out of the ground. A huge crepe mytle is going in the ground in its place.
I have 4 kinds of sangs growing now and 1 Kartuz pink vulcanicola which ABADS says is not really one. So who knows! I also have seedlings of various crosses.
If someone has time, look up Jeanne's thread where she posts all of her different colors and link here. They were beautiful! She and Liz are the sang queens.
Just looked Kell,if I get one to bloom,I am afraid I will be hooked on them too!Your trunk is HUGE!
Here's one of Liz's threads http://davesgarden.com/t/370710/ My sang is one of her babies from seed.
Thanks, Sue, for both links :) More to learn, more to learn...
My mantra for the next several days will be "sangs, arborea, vaulcanicola, flava" so as to remember!
Truly, thank you for clarifying and for very helpful information!
Kell, I wanna be your friend....lol
