In the aftermath of last weekend's storm.....

Northern California, CA

...a couple of bright spots in the greenhouse. 'Inca Princess' has buds that are maturing and one is ready to bloom in a few days.

Also 'Peaches and cream (the backup to the one in ground) is blooming. All the in ground Brugs seem to be doing just fine with the terrible wind and rain we've had over the last few weeks. The wind took out a big branch on one of the 'Charles Grimaldi', but it probably needed to come off anyway.

We had 8 trees rip out of the ground, 7 are back in and restaked (AGAIN!!!), but we lost one of our big Eucalyptus trees and had to cut it up to get it away from the GH and the fence. At least we won't have to restake that sucker again. LOL! The winds were above 70MPH and lasted for about 5 hours on Saturday morning. Frightening and 4 inches of rain that came down horizontally.

oy, what a storm. glad you're safe and glad you have mostly survivors!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh, with winds like that you are lucky to have anything unshredded!

Which one is Inca Princess? I looked at Kartuz and he only has Inca Queen.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

WOW 70 mph winds. Yes definatly glad your ok. LOL the bud on Inca Princess reminds me of a Star fruit. mmmmm. See now you made me hungry again. LOL

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Nice flower. I have lots of trouble getting mine to bloom. Maya is much easier.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Is Inca Princess the yellow one? It looks nice & healthy.

It sucks being couped up all winter but at least we don't have to worry about plants outside during the winter storms. Hope all the bad weather has passed. 70mph winds would sure make me nervous!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

We had 9 degrees yesterday, 34 mph winds. Had enough of winter, let's see spring...real soon!

I'm cooking a LOT! Too cold to go out to eat.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great pictures, but the picture in my mind of that storm wasn't good. Hope you don't soon have to go through that again.

Morning All -

Yep it is the Yellow one and supposed to be very hardy to cold (I think the 20's), but I bought it late in the season and didn't get it in the ground so it is living the life of Riley in the GH. I bought one for my daughter at the same time and hers is blooming and in the ground in Berkeley in a sheltered corner.

We consistantly get several of these freak windstorms each year between Oct and March. The three we've had this year have been milder than the one that did millions of dollars of damage to the whole neighborhood last December. The neighbors across the street have had the roof done twice after the storms and now have hurricane tie-downs installed.

Admittedly most of the trees are young at about 4 1/2 years in the ground, but it takes a lot of wind to yank them out and lay them down with their roots pointing at the sky. I left nothing out in pots this year.....it's impossible to keep them upright. Last year an April storm decapitated my 4' tall Euphorbia ammak. So now I have two, one deformed and a nice fat top that's growing on its own.

Kell, here's a couple of links I found for Inca Princess:

me too! The thought of anything animate or inanimate makes me hungry. Gotta get out there in the garden to work, it's the world's best diet. Hours pass and I never think of food. :-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will have to look now at which one I have. Kartuz is now only selling B. SANGUINEA ‘YELLOW QUEEN.’ I wonder what the difference is.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Wow that's a minimal hurricane here. Make sure you to keep those trees well watered for about a month until they get re established some and leave them staked until summer when it is actively growing good. Take it from someone that lives in hurricane country.

Hi Donna -

Well watered, you say? LOL....you see that's part of the problem. We get all our rain from late October until early April and then it never (well hardly ever) rains from late spring through late fall.

We've had a lot of rain this year, the ground is saturated, then runoff starts, then the wind comes and down go the trees.

Most of these trees that went down were staked with pressure treated double tree stakes pounded 18" into the ground. Those poles just snapped like match-sticks.

Last year when some of the same trees went down they lay on the ground for a good two weeks with their roots exposed. The storms went on and on and finally we got out there to put them back in......they seem to almost enjoy their yearly root airation.

Life is an adventure and gardening is a big part of my adventure. Someday I WILL have big trees here. I just need to live long enough to see them! Over Christmas we drove by two houses we built in another part of the Bay area.

The first garden is now 24 years old.....the trees are awesome. Most of the plants I put in are still there and the Japanese maples are beautiful specimens. The second house we built 20 years ago also has most of the original plantings, but the trees really need pruning...I could hardly keep my hands to myself. It's a good thing the chainsaw was not along for the ride. :-)

I've rarely been concerned during any of our prior storms...but when things started falling off the mantel because the house was shaking so much, I actually was frightened and began moving things to the floor until it subsided.

An expert could explain our micro-climate better than I can, but we are at about 1000' elevation and the cold air from the Bay meets the warm air coming out of the Sacramento Valley and we are at the base of a 4000' mountain.....can you say convergence? It's a wind tunnel, plain and simple.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Yep sounds like a hurricane to me. Thats why we lose trees. We get so much rain so fast during a hurricane most things up root.

My B. sanguinea 'Inca Princess' has moved from the GH to the sunroom. She is getting so big and hogging more than her share of the airspace in the GH. She's been blooming for the last couple of weeks and has put on a ton of buds.

A real joy to see her flourishing, can't wait to plant her outside in a few weeks.

Wow, that Inca Princess is a looker of a bloom. I'm glad things are doing fairly well through the weather problems though. Hope your nice weather starts early for you and that rain will fall during the summer. That would give you a little break from watering anyway. LOL!

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

a few weeks? :) must be nice to see spring so close? Brugie your so nice to wish such tidings,---I was green with envy lol nice blooms by the way, and yes I too wish you good weather tho I covent your growing season lol cheryl

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Did you say where you bought this one Happenstance? It looks like a bigger bloom than Inca Queen by the picture.

How did you decide to move to Clayton? Sounds like you could have picked friendlier climates fairly close to where you are?

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

yep.. sounds just like a typical hurricane to me
lol
though, we've never had any of our trees uprooted (they're all huge oaks that are like 50 years orso old)
but sounds pretty typical to the amount of damage i normally see in other people's yards after a little hurricane
i've got a eucalyptus tree i could take some cuttings of and root 'em for ya if you want to replace yours.. lol :)

if your trees last long enough to get big, they'll provide a lot of wind protection for the rest of your yard, and the house too

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

HappenStance, very nice the way you arranged the photos of the pretty orangey brug. Hope you don't get any more severe windstorms. I get a lot of wind here. Wind blew all night from the south, probably 25 to 30 mph. The just a bit ago rained hard for a few minutes. The snow is melting!!!!! Donna
