Green Bell Peppers & Tomatoes

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

This is my second season for just a few tomatoes. I am happy to report the maters are popping up all over the plant, much better than last year. With the green bell peppers, this is my first year and I have teeny tiny wittle peppers!!!!!!! Late summer I put in red bell pepper plants on the west side of my house (too hot elsewhere). They didnt do anything other than just get taller. Winter came, I transplanted them out on the south side with the maters and by george I think we're gonna get some red bell peppers too!! I know this probly seems silly, but we live in the burbs, not much ground to work with. We have 4 strawberry plants, some walkin egyptian onions, 3 mater plants 4 bell peppers and some garlics that are doing very well. Remember, down here in the deeeeep south, it's too hot to grow veggies in the summer, or the rain is too hard. So winter is good for growing eatables. Thanks for listening.

Shut up now Molly

mollymc - being a new york state gardner i always assumed that in florida you could grow anything anytime. guess i was wrong. on the bright side, its going down to about 20 degrees tonight and its even snowing right now.

Molly ---- I live in Pembroke Pines just south of you. (10 miles) I grow tomatoes and peppers in containers all year long and as long as you water during the day and keep the plants away from walls so as they get plenty of air circulation you should not have any problems. Cherry tomatoes grow thru-out the summer. The advantage of container growing is that you can move them away from the noon sun. (summer heat)
P.S. My tomatoes are also doing great.

TPlant, so nice to hear from you. And so close too. I was told it was too hot to grow veggies and unfortunately for the 2nd batch of tomatoes they must have heard it too. But then they are all in the ground so I can't move them. I tried growing them on the other side of the house in the fall, but they didn't cooperate. They died. That's why I'm so happy they are all so doing well now. I surely will decide to plant the next batch in containers. Because those home growns taste so much better than Publix maters.
Thanks for the tip.

Molly - Sounds like you are doing great with your vegies. I have caught the "seed planting fever" and really want to see something grow that I started. I know that sounds silly, but I never planted a seed before. I will grow them in containers and have one of those "flat bed on wheels pull along" thingys so I can move them if need be. BTW, how is your Queen's Wreath doing? The leaves on mine have a dark stain that looks like soot, but it's still growing OK.

Molly --- Try cherry tomatoes in summer.they seem to tolorate the heat. Don't forget the peppers and eggplants.I hear melons, carrots, onions, squash almost anything will grow, especially legumes.

Patishell---I grow all my veggies from seed and use two Gro-Lites.You can use flourescent lights on a stand indoors. This works best and it gives me a feeling of pride
to grow my own.

Patricia, Hi, yep, I'm really excited about the veggies. I also have some egyptian walking onions and some garlic. The queen's wreath seem to be semi-dormant. I have them in qt. pots waiting for them to grow some more. If I put them in the ground now, they will get lost and mowed. So I'm still waiting. I bought 2 of those from Almost Eden. You got me started on some coleus. I bought a bunch from HD and put them around. How's yours doing?

TPlant, I think I will give it a try this summer. Things are looking so good now, how can I not? Usually if I find I can grow something, I keep doing it. :^)

Molly-- recommend SUNMASTER,HEATWAVE,TROPIC,HOMESTEAD 500,BHN-444,FLORIDA 91,NEPTUNE TO NAME A FEW WHICH YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIND SEEDLINGS AT LOWE,S OR HOME DEPOT.ALL ARE GOOD HOT WEATHER TOLERANT-- BUT MUST BE KEPT OUT OF NOON SUN. SEEDS FOR MOST CAN BE FOUND AT "TOMATOE GROWERS SUPPLY COMPANY". START SEEDS IN MARCH AND SET OUT IN APRIL.

Hi Molly. My Coleus are doing great. I have found that the regular Coleus (Light stems) do great in the cooler weather, but the Sun Coleus really HATE it. I have such an assortment of plants, one of this, two of that, etc. that it has been a great opportunity to see which ones stand up to it and which ones are tender. My Queen's Wreath is just kinda' growing, but my Tangerine Cross Vine is growing like crazy. Going to HD today to buy lattice for it. The Impatience love the cooler weather! Just a huge mass of blooms. Found a beautiful Angel Wing Begonia at a yard sale, but of course she has to stay in the house.

Thanks TPLANT for the reccommendations for Molly. I'm getting excited about tomatos!

For all you fellow Floridians in search of fresh maters, here is a great link with some other varieties to try here in the deep south:

I have had good luck with Sunmaster and Floramerica. Celebrity is OK, but not as good as the other two--at least not in Central Fl.

Tplant, thanks for the ideas about the heat tolerant tomatoes. I will see what look for them when I get ready for my next planting.

And thank you too, Butterfly. It's much better to try something that has a chance of success.

:^)
