It has nothing to do with the owner, just the weather. You can get these in nearly every nursery in So CAl... not sure about the rest of the country.

I love this weird little plant but it does not appear to like my humid garden. The hurricanes don't help either!
However, after some research here at Dave's garden, I will try a different appproach. Maybe inside, at least for the summer. Also, I'll have to remember to forget to water...no problem.

The only way I ever knew to get one was by 'gifting' from friends. My Grandma always called this a rosary vine.
