its all wet......yuck

smithton, MO(Zone 5a)

my greenhouse is 12X24 from farm tek....the poly covering is not just the clear plastic, its more like a woven canvas type stuff..im sure there is someone who knows what im talking about...well anyways, its very wet inside...its dripping everywhere....condensation

here is the specs on the inside
temp 70 degrees
humidity 45
4ft oscilating fan goin on medium 24/7

outside specs
temp 30 degrees
raining, sleet
no sun
slight breeze

im worried about the rot on my plants since the weather is gonna be like this for a day or so

my greenhouse is not air tight but i have done all that i can to make it as air tight as i can..and no i dont have a 2nd layer of plastic on(whole other story)

when i left the greenhouse today i put the fan in the middle of it, instead of it being at one end to see if that made a difference and lowered the temp to about 65

any suggestions or comments are so very appreciated

happy winter..lol

Cindy, is there any source of heat in your GH? You do need a little ventilation(fresh air).
Is the floor just dirt, or do you have a covering of some kind on it?
You may need some kind of dehumidifier if the moisture is an ongoing problem.

my heater is a big hastings furnace...96,000 btu...i am sure i have not found all my air leaks so there is fresh air that gets in, but not because i want it to..lol

my floor is dirt with a layer of our lovely red river rock

my dear friend, whom i called after i posted this, told me that it will do this and not much i can do except for product that can be applied to my plastic....but she said if keep an eye and make sure that not much moisture gets on my plants ill be ok

i guess it just means i wont need to water anything anytime soon..lol

The difference in outside temp and inside temp will certainly create moisture/dripping inside. (One of the reasons people go with double poly layers.)

The fan you have running inside, if on a quick speed and aimed correctly, will certainly help. Air circulation is very important in a closed environment such as you have. As for making it "airtight"...don't.

Heaters rely on air for perfect combustion. Unless your heater is pulling air in from outside you'll need those "leaks" to help your heater run efficiently. (Could you tell us what type of heater you have? What kind of fuel?)

Also, what kind of plants are you growing/wintering in your ghouse? (If just wintering something over then there is no need to have your ghouse heated to 70.)

Also (again!), 45% humidity is just fine. NO worries. (Keep the air circulating tho so there are no stagnate air pockets.)

my heater is an old Hastings, which looks just like a Modine...it runs off of propane

i have everything from tropicals, to cacti in my greenhouse along with some roses and other perrenials which didnt get outside in time

i am wanting to start seeds also, so that is the reason for the higher temps

i do want to do the 2nd layer of plastic but im not sure how to go about it since the covering isnt like the poly you would see on most greenhouses

ill work on that next fall for next winter

the fan is on high/med 24/7

thanks for all the input

Wow! Sounds like you have a good set up then.

Can you just heat to around 50, and that temp should be fine for over-wintering your plants?

As for starting seeds, maybe next year (or now?) you can buy a heat mat. It's easier to heat the soil in your flats than to heat the whole g-house. I have one of my heat mats on a shelf where I can hang plastic around it to hold the heat in...it really is a lifesaver.

i like using an inflated poly tune in my houses...
fairly cheap and easy to set up.
cheaper to have one fan as opposed to the 6 I'd require in any one of my houses...
8 fans for 8 houses is certainly cheaper than 48 haf fans!!!

anyway, the poly tube has punched holes on each side.
when hung from the ceiling it circulates air nicely throughout the house.
you can even set it so your heater shoots into the tube.

ohh and those anit-condensation plastics are just treated with a wetting agent, they do keep the drip running down the plastic as opposed to just dripping... however if any wind hits the plastic it still drips. My houses literally rain in the early morn.
