Propogating Lily bulbs- it worked for me! (:

hello, i tried a method from a propogating book i have that descibes how to propogate lily bulbs, take a zip lock baggie and fill it with about an inch and a half of peat, wet the peat down so it is moist, take the scales from a lily bulb and place it ontop of the peat.. some i just set on the top , others i put just a corner of the scale in the peat maybe a quarter of an inch down in , zip the baggie almost shut, blow air into the baggie to inflate it as much as it will go, and zip the baggie shut... place in a cool dark place (about 60 degrees F. ) , leave for a few weeks and whalla, u will have little bulbs growing off of the scales , i put mine in a cubboard that always stays cool.. i did this around the first days of dec. , forgot about them and just happened to go into that cubboard yesterday and notice that i have baby bulbs!!!!! the book suggests using a funguside on the scales, i didnt have any , and these scales had fallen off of some lily bulbs during shipping... so i figured , why not... i'll give it a try.. and now i am glad i did!!! (: here is a pic below of the baby bulbs growing on the top scales.. i havent checked all the scales.. just what i can see without disturbing them.. anyway check it out...(:

excellent!

note to self: break a few scales off of the next lily bulbs you plant. =)

Good job chrissy, seems like lilies are plenty easy to propagate. They ready develop bulbs on the scales, they make bulbs along the stems and they set vast amounts of seed. Well, at least some of them do. I'm not very patient, but I think I will have to try this with some of my bulbs that don't increase quite as readily. You've given me the incentive I needed.

u guys are welcome! (: i am just excited they get all gooshy and moldy... once i put them in that cubbord i forgot all about them,.. and yes i think this will be great for the ones that dont propogate very easily!!! (: the book i read it in said to leave them in the bag and cubbord till spring... then plant them with or without the scale attatched... and they show a pic of this little bulb with a long green leaf out the top... (: i love things that work that u need very little effort to make happen!!! (: lilyfan i still dont know which bulbs these scales fell off of.. (:

chrissy, I went back through the posts and I couldn't tell which ones they were from either. Guess you'll know when they bloom, until then the waiting game!
