Sparkle loves the warmer part of the pond,
Taking a warm bath,
In my dreams...my pond is frozen solid :(...looking
forward to it looking 1/2 as lush as yours ;)
Lil,I'm not surprised,I talk to a nice lady ftom Thunder Bay,and she had snow in june still on the ground,I think she is zone 3 also, and she grows around 400 orchids or more,to keep her sane thru the winter months.
It was last year that we had snow in June as well. Most
years it's gone in April and plants can be put out beg. to
mid may but not last year :(...
Well the weathermans forcast for here is average to a warmer winter here, and just a little on the dry side too, have you heard what it will be up there?
According to "The Old Farmer's Almanac 2004" Canadian
edition possible snow mid to late April and May (Alberta
was mentioned specifically) Precipitation to be near
normal. Summer will be slightly cooler and wetter than normal (yipee) despite a hot July. September and October
will be colder than normal :(, with above annual precipitation and snowfall (that we can use...drought is
a horrible thing)
Lil,
Don't you get lots of snow thru the winter time to provide you with lots of moisture?
I always thought there was a lot of rainfall there for all the green I see in the pictures.
This winter... Saskatchewan temperatures will be colder
than normal (bleeech), with above annual precipitation
and snowfall.
The weather now is so strange from when I was a child.
We used to get extremely heavy snowfalls but not so much
now. Last few springs we did get snow or rain at the right
time to make it so nice and green it looked like we were
in Ireland but we've had much hotter summers and all the
ground moisture disappeared. We still have a few people
from Texas that summer over here...they'd rather have a
few weeks of hot dry heat than the humid heat of their home town.
Lil,I use to trade with a lady fron Novia Scotia, and her fall colors where just out of this world, are yours that way too, where everything looks like its on fire, with all the reds and oranges ?
Oh My!Lil
Goosebumps popped up & down my arms!!!
Now thats cold!!!!
-30F when pic taken....we are looking at -47F Sunday
(both with windchill factored in) :~b
Moose Jaw had it's worst fire in a hundred years
Jan 1...fireman were just as icy looking.
LOL! Lil,and I was just starting to warm back up!LOL!
Once my house adjusts to the temp change I'll warm up
too! ;)
So how well do you think your insulated greenhouse would
do here year round? -15F is about average here but we
will get 2-4 weeks of really NASTY temps.
You know Lil!
If I were you I'd dig me a sun pit, about 10 ft deep, then use the 8 inch dead air space for the roof, send me a map of where your located at!I don't think the north pole is that cold!!LOL!
ROFLMAO...just saw someone from Inuvik in town today...
he said it was -65F there! ;)
He came to moose jaw to warm up!!!LOL!
Yep!
Tropicman...we just had -64F(with windchill) on January 28th
Are you coming to visit???? ;)
Hi Lil,
We had -1 below this morning windchill, and I was thinking what I heard on the news this morning before work, where this scientist just came back home from the south pole to north dakota, and discovered it was colder at home than where he had been living at the south pole!!!
Ain't that a bummer!!!LOL
And oh so true...Key Lake, Sk., was about -64 on Jan 28th as well (without windchill included)...they declared it the coldest place on earth that day!
I doubt you could tell much difference from just -64 and windchill -64,in my books cold is cold, anything under 60*
I'm cold!!LOL!
No there is no difference...but I imagine they had windchill that took them down to -80 or so. We do have a giant frozen pond in front of our house now...watermain broke at the top of the hill and it's been coming down our street for two hours now. The four foot drifts (we have a blizzard) are making nice dams and the -41F temps are causing some icing. Going to work tomorrow will be a real adventure. :(
Lil,were experincing water main breaks all over town here too. These pipes have been in the ground anywhere from 50 to 100 yrs,and there just rusted down to nothing, water pipes have broken this yr on both sides of me,helen to my right has had 2 break, one was right in the middle of here driveway, and the next one right at the edge of the driveway.they just put rubber hoses over both ends of the pipe and hose clamps to fix the breaks. How do they dig the frozen ground to fix them up there especially when its so cold outside?
The same way they dig graves here.....burn a tire(s) on the spot. My DH says they also have propane powered heater and large jackhammers on the back of a backhoe. Ours have been replaced a number of times in some areas but the freezing is now down to ten feet and the ground is heaving.

Oh My 10ft!!!I don't know how they can work outside in that cold!!!
Most city workers were pulled in when we hit -50C...since they can't tell when frostbite has occured. But when a main breaks or there is a fire....some people have to go out :(. Glad I'm not an outside worker!
