Pretty Red Food

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

As I was out this fine New Years day harvesting, I almost had everything chopped and decided I might post a couple of my favorite red things before they became dinner. Here is some swiss chard. I have never had one this dark before. I need to move the plants. The area they are in is too shaded.

The lettuce is indeed oak leaf and the chard was in the "brights" pack that I bought. I usualy get oranges and yellows but got a couple of these as well this year. If I see chard called rubarb, you can bet I will get it next time. Thanks

Frogus www.johnnyseeds.com item 702 ruby red or rhubarb chard 59 days candy apple red stems with dark green leaves.
Decorative and tasty, Young plants may bolt if exposed to spring frost.

I don't think this is the same thing as the red in Bright Lights but could be wrong seems to me when I grew them both at the same the red in the brights was thicker in the stem but could be wrong about that to. Ernie.

I used to raise the rhubarb chard but changed to the green and white kind because I think it looks better in my stir fry dishes. The colored stuff is very pretty growing and ok for just steaming some to serve for dinner. Winter is here with a vengence so it is nice to see some live plants, thanks for posting those pics.

Amazingly, chard grows for about 18 months here and gets huge here before it decides to bolt. It gets big tubers. I row some just for pretty. My family does not like it so it is just me and the neighbors lol. I sneak it in soup and pasta sauce though. I keep one plant of each color. I wish I had taken pics befor the las ones bolted. They were quite beautiful.

Mary, winter is lettuce season here. It is too durned hot and dry inthe summer. O just stick lettuce around the edges of the flower beds and a couple of patches. I wish I could get lettuce and tomatoes at the same time. The bell peppers are also good right now. The beets are not up to snuff this year though.

It's snow season here so nothing is growing. We probably won't even see the ground until about the first of March. Enjoy your garden for me, ok?

My I join the 'nothing is going to grow for sometime here' club, Mary? Our 2nd or 3 winter storm is upon us even as I type. The only way I'll be getting anything to grow here is in the plant room or somewhere else in the house.
