what varieties of bananas are edible?
how does one go about getting blooms out of their nanner tree?
does it involve doing some sort of rain-type dance to the banana gods/goddesses or something?lol
i've got a banana tree.. of undetermined variety
and i was just curious
it's about 6-8'
it was really pretty before the cold weather started..
now the leaves are all brown and it's looking kinda like it might be trying to die
i know it's not actually dying...
just going dormant
it's in a pot
and i would really like to keep it that way because bananas seem to be a very invasive species here.. i never see anyone with just one tree, where there's bananas, there's massive groups of them
but i would also like to get blooms, so if i have to put it in the ground to get blooms, i suppose that's what i'll have to do, and just be very careful about keeping it from spreading too much
lol

getting bananas?
I have an ornamental 'African Red' potted and it bloomed in the house in the pot. Right now the bloom and the stalk it bloomed on have croaked and the pups are doing "just okay".
I acquired a "dwarf cavendish" from John and it is also potted. This one only needs to grow to 6' before bearing nanas but right now it too is looking quite dormant.
Hoping for spring soon!
thanks
i suppose there is hope that my nanner will bloom without being grounded...
cool! :)

Our Dwarf Cavendish is fruiting right now. It's been fun to watch...I'll start another thread of pictures. By the look of the stalk we're going to have a lot of bananas!
Oh, how I miss the south - my dwarf cavendish is just a little stump in the pot and all brown at that!
Can't say that I know anything about your dwarf plants but here in the Cayman Islands our plants need a lot of feeding to bloom. We also cut down the mother plant after she has produced since she will die anyway and then allow the (1)best of the side shoots to grow and remove the others. You can transplant them else where if you choose or give them to friends. Hope this helps.
well i thought my nanner was going dormant, but it's decided not to, i suppose
it mostly looks dead.. like it *was* going to go dormant..
except it unfurled a new leaf this week...i guess it changed its' mind
lol
hi miss kitty,
Don't cut your stalks back thinking they are dead from the cold! If you do, you will lose the chance of it making nannas. I usually wait to cut my stalks back after we are finished having cold weather. Give the stalk a little nudge and if it bends or falls easy, then cut it back, if it gives any resistance at all, leave it standing. Also, don't cut off the dead brown leaves yet, even though it is unsightly, they are added protection to the stalk.
Hope this helps!
i havent cut anything back...
i was pondering it, because the tree is looking really ugly right now, but when i saw that it was making new leaves, i decided to just let it be ugly
lol
i really wish i knew what kind of nanner i've got...
i suppose when it's big and pretty again, i'll have to take pics of it and post 'em

I cannot for the life of me remember where I got my information, But I was told, that if I wanted bananas, I would have to have it in the ground, they said it needed room to make new banana pups and to bloom. that it wouldn't grow tall enough and wouldn't produce bananas in a pot. I sure wish I could remember who told me that. But I thought I'd get a very huge pot the kind from the nursery that they use for huge trees. and try that this spring. instead of putting it in the ground and having to dig it back up again in the winter. Jeese, that's alot of work.
i wouldnt have to dig mine up in the winter...
i've got the opposite problem, if i put mine in the ground, i'll probably end up with a whole bunch of nanner trees..
and i only really want the one.. maybe another one, but not a huge stand of trees like everyone else here has
