Fred from Alabama surprised me yesterday, called on his trip down. He banded a rufous male and rufous female at my house. He was on his way to band a potential first in florida, a broad bill ... about 15 miles from here, guess i'll find out in a day or two if it was a broad bill hummer. my sis was here, she got to hold the boy, and it peed in her hand as it flew off. He said the boy weighed more than any rufous male he had banded this winter, but he didn't know why.
two rufous hummers banded
How exciting Arlene! (Especially for your sister...lol) Let us know if it really was a broad bill hummer.
Your little guy weighed in heavy because he has so much to eat at your place! LOL I'll never forget my nose to nose encounter with one of your hummers!
Stacey, Happy New Year to you and yours! and you too Connie!
week before Christmas we had a killing frost, just a few blooms here and there now.
Fred banded a black chin, calliope, and 3-4 more rufous in Gainesville last Sunday. missed the broad bill. they marked the calliope, pink dot on the head, to see if the one they thought was a broad bill might be the calliope instead.
