enable usb download from dig camera

Hi
We received a digital camera for Christmas and we wish to download pix thru a usb connection to an older computer with a asus p5a motherboard. The computer has Windows 98 (1st edition) on it. With older machines do usb connections have to be enabled in the bios, or does some other procedure have to be followed? I have prowled through the online pdf manual for that motherboard and have not yet found anything about the usb ports present in the machine. Oh another thought: if usb connections are enabled, would their presence be seen once System in Control Panel is accessed....
