Hot water treatment for new cuttings

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

I recall reading a post about imersing your new cuttings in HOT water to rid of pathogens before starting the rooting process. I cannot find the post using 'search'. Maybe it was posted in BGI. Any help in relocating the post or comments on this treatment of new cuttings is appreciated. Padre

Padre, arlene has talked about it for a long time, soak them for 30 minutes in 120° water.

I run mine under very warm tap water, as soon as I get them.
Each time I change water in jar, I use pretty warm, not hot water.

Thanks for the prompt replies. Off to do it. :-)

What if your hot water is run through a water softener? Does that create problems, or not? Would I be better off heating the cold water instead, since that is not softened?

I'm not sure if softeners put salt in the water? Do you use tap water to start cuttings, Anna? Do they start ok?
We have well water with all kinds of minerals, lime, sulfur, calcium, iron, etc

Yes, I use just plain ole tap water, have had great success with that. Our water is so hard you almost have to cut it off when you have enough. I tell people that is why it tastes so good, because of all the minerals, etc. in it! I have hardly no trouble starting woody cuttings in water, now green cuttings are another story, I don't have good luck with those no matter what I do. Light soil, water, reg. potting soil, using rooting hormone......I give up, will just root the woody ones.

Sounds like your water isn't getting salt in it, if you can start cuttings. Don't feel bad about not getting green cuttings to root, everyone else seems to have trouble getting them going. I do very well with both, hardly ever lose one. Will have DH take a pic of my setup for starting the green cuttings.
