Hi from NW Iowa

I just found the welcome mat. I subscribed about 2 weeks ago and am really enjoying reading the threads and am already working on a seed trade. I don't know how anyone can garden and still find time to read DG. LOL There is SO much interesting and new information here!

Welcome, Kooger! So glad you found DG, and the Welcome Mat forum. This is a wonderful cybercommunity, and it's great to see you here!

Hi kooger, From another Iowan (there are a few of us in here!)welcome to Dave's Garden. This is a wonderful site with lots of friendly helpful people. Enjoy!

Happy Holidays to you.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

thanks ALL! and a blessed Christmas to all. Merigold, would you like to meet sometime? I'm just a long hour north of you. I used to get to SC every Fri. when I ran the Voortman cookie route. Sold it so don't get there as often now. I was listed as a 4a at first but then looked at the map someone else posted, and it looks like we're a 4b now. Do you think I have that right? I guess it's no big deal. As to what I grow, well, my dreams are big but my garden is small. I put in a shade garden 2 years ago - hostas, astilbe, columbine, bleeding heart, coral bells, forget-me-not and annual coleus in front. It's looking great except the forget-me-not winterkilled but reseeded in different places but never bloomed. The greenhouse guy said they often winterkill in our area because they have such shallow roots. I ended up replacing them with 2 other perennials which I can't remember the names of and the tags are under snow now. In the garden I have globe thistle, red monarda, lupine, German statice, blue and pink scabiosa, delphiniums, Laura (my name)phlox, a couple campanula, Johnson blue and another long name geranium, a tall white phlox, rudbeckia, white and purple coneflower, orange and pink oriental poppies, and I'm sure I missed something. Under the hedge are peonies and bulbs and under the fir tree are hostas - Sum and Substance, Blue Angel, and Laura and Darrell (my and hubby's names:)). I just put porcupine grass, penstamon, Russian sage, bluet, and blue salvia on the west side and have a few miniature irises, cardinal flower (will probably winterkill), coreopsis, halycon hosta, Marco Polo lilies (my pride and joy - had 12 blooms on 3 stalks last summer), varigated sage and allium. I have probably bored you all to death by now. Sorry! I need to learn how to put colors together. I just got a new digital camera so I hope to learn how to post pics. Any tips?

Hi Kooger, welcome to Daves from another Iowan. Iowa is getting a good population here now. Hope to get to know you in the forums and maybe at the Iowa Roundup. Will get information to you about that later this winter. Enjoy your stay with us here at Daves. This place can't be beat.

Welcome Kooger!!
I'm still replaying that absolutely delicious mix of perennials you listed above. OMG, what fantastic mental pictures you have painted. I'm also looking forward to the Dave's Garden Round-Up this Spring, and hope to meet you there. As a lily lover, I'm ecstatic that you mentioned that you have 'Marco Polo' and that it did well for you! You must take a look at the "Bulbs" forum here on Dave's Garden.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Iowaron and a blessed Christmas to all. I know I am already a DG addict. I should be showering for church! :) I did read the bulb forum and loved it especially the pics. I took pics when my Marco Polo was in full bloom last year but I will have to talk to the 'puter experts (the kids!) to teach me how to scan and post them. The best one is out with the flu, it looks like. Postponed our family do til Fri., hoping he's better...I'm excited about all the Iowa DGs - hope to meet at the round-up!

kooger, I am going to my member page as soon as I'm done here and change my zone. I've looked at another map and you are correct we are 4b. It would be nice to meet some time, we are relatively close! It has been years since I've been in Inwood. I'm originally from South Dakota, geuss I have not been getting out much. LOL.

I joined DG this summer. I'm new to gardening and have just been getting my toes wet the last two summers, trying to figure out what to plant, how, ect. I'm looking forward to a roundup but want to be able to share something! Look forward to hearing more from you, and hope the computer wiz's get you up and running with some photos (I'm sure they will).

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Welcome from another Iowan. DG is very addictive. I am sitting here, when I should be doing housework and making out bills. You will have to come to the roundup. Brugie is such a gracious hostess. We had so much fun last year talking, eating and the plants that were to be had were fabulous.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

thanks Brugie! already told DH that I (we if he behaves, ha ha) am going to the IA roundup in May. Just got a call that I'm in the MG class starting in 2 wks. Yipee!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

What kind of plants does everyone bring? I always give away a dozen or so volunteer globe thistle, campanula, purple coneflower and pink and orange(red)poppies. Last summer I gave away about 6 volunteer purple huchera too. Should I pot these up and take them along? I have hostas that need splitting too. Please let me know what's expected. thanks!

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Kooger: All those plants that you have mentioned sound great. We had such a large variety last year. Brugie had dug up some hosta's and they were super. We had brugs, cannas, daylilies, campanulas, ferns, castor beans, dbl. impatiens, datura, gloriosa daisy, elephant ears, everything. It was like we were in heaven. Such fun.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

oh my, I think I'm drooling, just thinking about all those plants! I'll just pot up what comes up this spring. thanks for the reply Debby. I can't wait!!!

Hi kooger, it's great to see you enjoying your 'subscribed status'. You've got mail.
