Starting Tamarillo Seeds

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Hello,

I'm posting this here, as I've learned Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) are very closely related to Brugmansia.

I bought some Tamarillo seeds last year. I've tried a couple times to start them in seed starting mix and every time they have molded before germinating.

With Brugmansia, is it true folks usually soak the seeds and then put them in a paper towel in a platic bag to germinate? What exactly are the steps? After they germinate, you move them to a sterile medium?

I've only got a couple seeds left, so I'd like to try my best to succeed.

Thanks!

edited for typo.

Hi Eje! Yes, I do use the plastic bag method. I peel the seeds so I have the tender seed inside. I put it in 10% bleach solution for 1 minute. Then in a wet paper towel that is not soaking and into a plastic bag. I have had seed lost though, but also great success. This way beat my old method hands down!

I am going to try this way next.

Thanks for the hints kell.

I will give your method a try when I get back home after the holidays.

I saw the rock wool thread; but, thought you would use them post germination. Looking closer, I see that you are meant to germinate the seeds in the rock wool as well. Intruiging.
