thanks for the comments, the bulb is hardy to -5C,and it prefers full sun and well drained soil.It's in full flower now, although books say early summer. They have had a shift that may have put them out a bit.

I am not to good on zoning, but they are native to north America and California, so central Texas will probably be alright. Here's a link to a web site that can tell you lot's more.

A bulb - huh ! I am in zone 5a, so it is probably not hardy here and that is why I have never seen them before. They sure are beautiful - such a lovely deep color.

What a striking plant with that vivid blue! There are other pictures of it in the database that don't have such a wonderful blue. I don't think I've ever seen it either, even though it's native to No. America. Thanks for the photo and the link.

I can't quite get the exact right blue with my camera, after many shots I picked that one.and it still should show a little purple . I also got my brother to take a picture on his far more expensive camera,but came up with the same results.Anyone know how to correct this problem?
