New Pineapple

We live in Tampa, FL.

Just bought a new pineapple plant. Looking for info on them, such as:

- Care
- Determining ripeness
- How long until ripe (our fruit is green and about 2-3
inches around
- Read fertilizer kills them???
- Pest control (we have a significant spider issue)
- How about cold (32ish degrees)

The books I have don't say much.
