Washington, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi all, the brug in this picture is dropping its leaves! It was planted on 12-01-03. What should I do? I could just cry...

This was it before it got planted http://davesgarden.com/t/409612/

Hi,

I think that if you just keep warm and out of direct sun the leaves will come back. That is my opinion but I am sure someone that knowes a lot more than I do will offer you some info.

I don't know why it happens either, but I've had several that have lost all the leaves and are getting new ones. It seems that when the new ones come in, they are healthy and do well, so I don't worry about it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on it and hope for a recovery =)

Mine seem to lose leaves somtimes also, I dont worry now, unless I see somthing has eaten away at them, or they start to shrivel.

Hi fellow Trump-a-holics,
I was researchig a problem I am having with mine, and saw this thread. Mine are dropping off from a perfect slice type break, just where the leaf meets the stem. I am talking about perfectly healthy green leaves!!! Am I to believe this is ok? Yes, they still have new green growth of more leaves coming out in different places all over. Why would a perfectly healthy leaf just break off? Well, if it is nothing to worry about, I don't care,,, I was just very concerned I had a problem. Thank you for being such a wonderful helpful group.

Karen mine are doing the same thing, the other plants next to it are fine, but this one the leaves wilted a little then droped, but new leaves are growing

I've had a few leaves and buds do that this year. They almost looked like something had sliced them off. I have no idea what it is, but since it was not the whole plant or all the buds, I just ignored it. Now they are all in the garage. I'll be able to show you some serious leaf drop in a few days. LOL!

HI Brugie,
So you mean yours are in the garage and OK? Or did the loss hurt them? Or too soon to tell? It just baffles me why this would happen to perfectly healthy green leaves for no apparent reason. It's not like they were yellow or wilted or anything, just POOF they were gone, like a magic knife sliced them where they meet the stem.
Thank you for your response.

This was happening to some of mine before I had to take them in. I have no idea why. At this time of the year in Iowa, it is normal for them to drop leaves and buds, but at that time it was confusing. It seemed to quit. I was thinking that maybe it happened to mine because of a hail storm, but there were no visible marks on the leaves or buds to indicate why it happened. No, it didn't hurt them to lose the leaves. I don't worry about them if they don't have bugs or haven't gone dry. Both of those conditions will cause leaf and bud drop. Maybe plants are like humans. They have to shed some skin once in a while to make way for new stuff. LOL!

thank you Brugie :-)

I have only noticed sudden drop syndrome when my plant is in shock. I remember when I moved my Maya tree inside last year. In 3 days it dropped hundreds of leaves. Scared me! I quick moved it back out.

of course i am not an expert. i just share info from personal experiences, using my common sense since we all have different growing environment, affected by soil type, temperature and kind of effort we put into growing plants.

from personal observation, when plants are moved from one environment to the other, they will definitely shed leaves -- it is their natural reaction to changes. or the plant is not suited to one's environment. i have observed this in several of brugs i grow like Milk N Honey, Ember Glow and Ursuline x Cuba. when the peak of summer came in, all leaves dropped to the point plant looked like they were dead. now that the weather is cooler, they are coming back to life.

funny u are all so concerned about losing leaves. i have been doing experiments on brugs i grow. after all they are my plants right? so i can do my own experiment/s to see how grown plants will react. any who, i have been cutting off the bigger leaves off my grown brugs. result??? i noticed after i take off bigger leaves, i left the new growths alone. after cutting off bigger leaves, brug's growth is focus on new growth - thereby forming new formation of new growths and Y-ing which produces new buds. of course, these experiments were based during the growing season in late summer, and not indoors. maybe some of u has been doing this, but it is all new to me! the very reason why i love to do experiments and find out for myself how plants would reach to certain experimentation i explore into.

i have noticed too, taking bigger leaves off, i had less problems with bugs! with less growth it is easy to detect or see bug looming around the growing plant.

just thought to throw in my 2¢ opinion.

here is a photo of a brugs whose older leaves were taken off.
