Brug Ecuador Pink

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

2 weeks ago I thought this brug was dead. The top of this cutting died all the way down to the soil so i thought it was dead. I took this brug and put it in my laundry room to throw it away. I forgot about it on the shelf for a couple of weeks, I've been sick and just have been checking on my brugs. Today I went to throw it away and saw tiny green leaves coming out of the soil. I was so shocked, the top is completly dried up and dead, but it's growing under the soil. I am so happy I didn't throw out this cutting. I've been wanting to grow a Ecuador Pink. I have a couple of other brugs doing the same thing, but I will wait and see if they grow also. Don't give up on brug cuttings that are dieing on the top, they still might be rooting under the soil. Thanks for all the wonderful advise given on this forum. Just wanted to share. Cathy

Well I'll be. Lucky you didn't pitch it out.

Thanks, Cathy. Isn't that funny? My EP did the exact same thing and even broke off just above the leaf node under the soil line after it dried up. I thought it was a goner too when I noticed the green leaves coming up out of the soil. Now it doesn't even look like a cutting; it looks like a brand new plant! Bonus!

Oh my, I wonder how many cuttings I've thrown away that I thought were goners, when they might have made it.

I had a PB do this too. I was pulling the dead cane out to re-use the soil and pot and when it came up, there was a fresh little start coming from the roots. I'm glad you brought this up Cathy. It might save some brugs for people. Thanks!!

This is very good advice! I've had a lot of cuttings shrivel up like this and then surprise me by sending up a new shoot. That's one reason I like to pot cuttings in clear containers... you can see if you have any root growth going on even if the the cutting looks dead.

I had a mishap with one of my big seedling plants the fall when I brought plants in. This paticular one didn't have a tag... so I left it outside to get frosted. Weeks later, when I was cleaning up , I yanked the plant up by the roots and the tag popped out of the ground. It was Knightii x L'amour!! I was so ticked at myself for leaving it out. I cut it back to a stub and stuck the rootball in a pot. I thought it was goner.... but just recently I noticed it's sending up new shoots.

I realized after I pulled the plant up I had planted it away from the others... because it was special!! I'm so glad it's still alive. It must have taken 4 or 5 frosts outside.

The stump just sat in the pot for 6 weeks before it showed any signs of life. I thought if the frost hadn't killed it I prolly killed it by ignoring it. Then just outta the blue a new shoot popped up. Too bad I didn't just bring it in right off... I would have had blooms a lot sooner.

I had HG do this, when I wanted to use that pot, pulled stick out and it had green shoots under the soil. I now have two more "sticks", under lights, rooted the side shoot, as they seemed to be dieing. We'll see.

Hmmm maybe better hold on to the Pink Beauties. They each had small leaf growth but now look dead.

I think next year I will use a clear container, do you use clear plastic cups? I am so happy I didn't throw out this plant, it's growing nicely now. I think being able to see the root system makes a lot of sence to me. The other plant that was doing this is dead, it died all the way. It was a vareigated white S.

I cut off soda bottles and poke drainage holes in the bottom. For cuttings I poke a few holes along the side on the bottom too, just make sure they have enough drainage.

I love a happy ending!!!!

and all the pictures you guys are posting...
