Dec 10, 2003 - brrrrrr!

southeast, NE

Good morning everyone! It's been a very emotional "whirl wind" week and it's not even over. I stayed home from work today. We had a snow storm blow through here yesterday. I'm not sure how much snow we actually had because the wind was really blowing. Lincoln reported that parts had 9 inches. I worked yesterday and several times on the highway, the snow was blinding. I was glad they let us out of work early and I didn't have to drive home in the dark. I was supposed to work today and could have went in later but I'm totally exhausted today and have a sore throat so decided to work tomorrow instead.

The situation with my dad came to a head this weekend. Long long story but he wouldn't even let my mom go to church and he wouldn't go either. The was pretty much the "straw that broke the camels back" as they never miss church. He was not eating, etc. and went from being extremely depressed to being extremely agitated over the littlest things. I drove up to my home town on Sunday and we talked my parents into going to Omaha. My sister had talked to the psychologist at the Heritage Center, a geriatric pschology residential center in Omaha. He said we should do an emergency admit of my dad at the hospital and they would probably admit into the center. So on Monday, at the insistence of my dad, we took him into his doctor's office and got him a flu shot and had his blood pressure and blood sugar checked which were both fine. (He was sure both were too high to travel.) We then went to the attorney and had him do a power of attorney assignment to me and mom which he was willing to do. I then took them to Omaha and met my two sisters. That was a very very emotional long drawn out process. However, the psychologist agreed that dad definitely needed inpatient treatment so they admitted him for at least two weeks. The hardest part was that dad did not want to sign himself in and we had to threaten to commit him. He was more worried about the "pipes freezing in their house" than anything.

The whole wait in the emergency room was very eye opening and depressing. At one point the police brought a 13-14 year old girl in with hand cuffs and leg restraints. She sat near us while one policeman visited with us. She was very calm and sat and listened to us but the policeman had to leave because of a shift change and she then became very agitated and they had to take her into another room and tied her down to a wheel chair. As the policeman was walking out, he didn't tell us the reason for bringing her into the hospital but did mention that her mother had been in jail for three weeks and that she was roaming the streets and that she was "great when things went her way". It was so sad.

And then to top all this emotional roller coaster, my husband said that "they" told him at his Guard Drill this weekend that they will soon be rotating more Guards people into deployment so they can bring the other men and women home. Therefore, the odds that he will get activated have really increased. I do realize that this is part of his job, but it doesn't make it any easier. He did call several friends and ask them if they would take our ewes and and our cows while he is gone. I feel guilty that we would have to send them away but there is no way that I can work and do the lambing and the calving. And the lambing and calving doesn't pay enough for me to be able to afford to not to work.

Well the good news is that my daughter received a nice surprise in the mail and received a $1000 scholarship. This together with a $600 scholarship she received last semester, will totally pay for her last semester tuition with a little left over to help pay for the previous semester. It is hard to believe that she only has 1 1/2 weeks left to this semester. She will only be home about a week and then will move to Randolph, Nebraska where she will be doing her student teaching. If everything was figured out correctly, and she passes all of her classes this semester, she will be one hour short of graduating in May. Her advisor said she can do an independent study to get the one hour. She is going to develop record books for FFA to get this accomplished. I do pray though that she passes all of her classes. She is having a hard time with Chemistry.

Okay - I have been long winded enough. It helps to share this with others. HOpe you all don't mind.

Kathleen - congrats on your new "addition". EvaMae - I hope your pet rat will recupperate. And I hope the rest of you are doing great.

Take care and stay warm!
