Starting Oleander from Seeds

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I have lots of Oleander seeds but have never grown them from seeds. I would like to know the best way to do this. If any of you have started any from seeds, how did you do it?

Dee...I started many years ago in a flat barely covered and use bottom heat of at least 80F.Keep moist but not wet! They grow easily from seeds.

I just looked at mine in the GH and it has a pod on it......
How long do they take?

Crestedchik, I'm not sure how long it takes to go from flower to seed. I watched these for a good couple of months. When the pods turned almost black and began to seperate I picked them.

I will say this when you strip them out and they'r still kinda damp they just clump together, but in a couple of hours they began to dry and fluff up. If you don't have them covered the slightest breeze blowing over them will send them every where........these things are worse than goose down.

They were all over my kitchen, living room and into the bedroom before I relized what was happening......

They float like dandlion seeds and are a mess so keep them in a covered container that will still let air in but not let them out.........LOL

The seedpod takes at least six months to ripen, maybe more. It grows really fast when it first develops, then just sits there for months! I have a bunch on mine, they ripened last year in December & January. I guess it's about time to check them again, they weren't ready when I looked a few weeks ago.

You are probably right Ronna, these were on a long time and I picked some to soon just to see if they were ready. There was just bits and a jelly like stuff in there and was it Sticcckkkkky. Like to never got it off my hands and fingers......LOL

I suspect that heat is very important in germinating oleander seeds. I have never tried to grow them on purpose, but I have volunteers come up every year and they don't sprout until well into the summer.

It takes a couple days short of forever for oleander seeds to ripen, I think.

i have never tried growing these from seed. They grow so fast and get so big and I find rooting cuttings so easy. Do the seedlings grow real real fast?
