36 degrees and raining but my green house came today! This is my first one,I can't wait till spring the foundation is all done so I'm gonna put it up this weekend no matter what the weather does. OH BOY can't wait!
Cold and raining but it's here!
Congratulations Brucedean!
You are going to have so much fun.
I have the parts for a greenhouse too, but have to wait on BF to help me put it togheter, I bet it will take a month before it's all done.
How big is your greenhouse?
Kris
Okay, so I'm going to be the nosey one! lol
Whatcha getting Bruce? Kris?
From where and how much??? :)
I'ts not real big 10x10 I don't have a whole lot of room.1 3/4 inch steel frame and 6 mil polly cover. Made by Powell Greenhouse co. $298.00 with shipping. Not real pricy but it will get me started.
Good for you Brucedean! Let us know how it goes up for you. How did you do the foundation?
Thanks, my yadd has a pretty good slope to it so I built the foundation out of 8 inch block filled with gravel mix and covered with blue board for isulation. It's one block high on the door side and 3high on the other side to make it level.
Congratulations! Greenhouses are like new babies, we never know just what they will do and can hardly wait to find out.
can't wait to see pictures bruce!
I'm curious, Bruce, Kris, tiG, to what temperature do you heat these during the winter? Does it really cost an arm and a leg to keep them up at balmy temps even here in the south?
Bruce, post pics! :) Even if it's just the boxes like poppysue! lol :)
angie, the rule of tropicals and most plants in a greenhouse, is 40-50 degrees to hold them (meaning plant stays green, and grows slowly if at all) 55-65 to grow them.
I try to get all my plants grown during summer, thus not needing to heat anything over 45 during winter.
last year for instance, I burned 4,000gallons of propane...
this year due to better growth over summer, I will probably only burn 2,000.
as far as how much does it cost.... well that depends on alot of factors. Insulation, size, outside surface area, type of heater. I find propane heaters and woodstoves to be most efficient. My fav is to run the woodburner on any night it is under 25 and let the propane deal with the rest.
best of luck.
Drew
Thanks drew, it's just scary to hear people saying it costs more to heat the gh than their home! lol (I was talking about these film houses like bruce has gotten)
eco...I have a "film" type greenhouse. Your best best is to used double layers, and inflate them. It really saves on heat loss, and heat cost.
thats what I have angie... poly film houses.
some are double insulated...
and yes, it costs alot more to heat my ghouses than house.
I mean, there is insulation in a house there is not much in a greenhouse.
actually my wife complains that I keep the greenhouses warmer than our house (which I keep around 50degrees).
Drew
lol Tell her y'all need to move out to the gh then! :) I'm going to start a new thread since I hijacked Bruce's glory. Sorry Bruce! Love ya! :)
Drew, if you kept me at 50 degrees, I'd have to toss your hiney out! it's cold when it's set at 68, and I'm serious!!
angie, we don't know what ours is costing yet, but we're trying to keep it above 50. DH has it set for 55 right now, even though I tell him it doesn't have to be that warm.
I actually have dreams of mine being a place I can hang out so I'm wanting 60 degrees! I'm being very demanding I know. lol Off to my new thread...
Hey Angie I don't know what it will cost to heat.It is a double walled poly with some kind of fiber mesh between the layers, supposed to stop it from ripping if it gets a hole in it.I insulated the block foundation which should help.Planning on using an oil heater with a thermostat,so I hope I can keep it about 55 without having to sell a kidney!I'd post pictures but I don't have a camera so ya'll just have to come look when it's done.Planing on making shelves out of 3/4 pvc and hard ware cloth, what do you think?
Bruce
Sounds great Bruce, good luck! :) I'm thinking of electric myself, but it'd be great to see what you've done once you get up and running. I may just have to make a trip to Jackson! :)
Your welcome any time
Angie, I never had a greenhouse before so I have no clue on heating costs. The one I'm getting is from Atlas and you can pretty much order any size you want. Mine will be a 20x30 "Snow Arch" with the ceiling 12' at the tallest point so I can fit my brug trees in there.
It will have motorized shutters, an exhaust fan, double poly inflated, and a propane heater.
You can rent the propane tank from the gas company, I think they said it's $38 per year, And they will install the gas line.
The greenhouse itself is not that expensive, it's all the other stuff that runs up the bill.

hmmm....really...thanks kris :)
wow how exciting-cant wait to see pictures!
the snow arch is the best ghouse for the money.
cheap, strong, and versatile.
I can hang 750 boston ferns in 12inch pots from it and even when wet puts no stress on the house.
if possible, go as tall as possible... ie 6ft sidewalls as opposed to 4ft...
you can't go back and make it taller.
Drew
I think if I'm going to get this past the homeowner's association, it's going to have to be peaked not arched. :P
Angie, the Snow Arch has a peak. It's called Snow Arch because it's designed to work even where there is lots of snow. The snow is supposed to slide off easy.
I have the six foot side walls.
The coldframe/hoophouses they have are round at the top.
oh. :)
Today I got the frame up and the cover on Hopfully tommorow I can get it tied down and the floor finished, then maybe move some of the 2 dozen plants that are still in pot because the new beds arn,t done yet,why aren't the beds done yet? because my brain says 20 years old but my back says not even close.
Bruce
