Anyone else have seed pods on Snowbank?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Had two and one got knocked off by the car door. I didn't pollinate it or did I expect to get a seed pod. I'm actually surprised that this one is hanging on and getting larger. Snowbank is still in the garage. It's about 40F in there right now. Last night it got down to about 35F. Someone kick me in my butt for not getting ALL of my plants out of the garage, I have about 20 in there. I did bring in some yesterday. The rest are to heavy for me to bring in and hubby is out of town.

I thought Snowbank didn't produce seeds?

How pretty the foliage is on your Snowbank, datdog! I'm too new to know such things, but I'm excited for you with your seed pod there :) I have two seed pods on a white brug that I keep watching and monitoring to see when they should be ripe. I've no idea what pollinated them as all my attempts at hand pollination failed. Good luck with your surprise!

Morph the foliage has actually all dropped off. Here is a picture I took in Oct. I really don't think this plant is worth having. The foliage burns TERRIBLE... I'm giving it one more season and then it's out of here. Not worth looking at ratty plant all summer.

Kristi ... Alice did if I remember correctly! Mine did not flower.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

How old is your plant? My Snowbank has not yet bloomed and is only about 24 inches tall. I agree about the foliage. It is just gorgeous at first, but then the white part just sort of melts and hangs in "drips." I have it inside (with very little foliage) and will give it another chance next year.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh my, yall are breaking my heart.....this is one I have wanted so badly. I wanted it because the foliage was so pretty. Now I hear it is not to hardy. Wonder if the other varigated are the same.
Wonder how it would do if you planted it in the shade. It's so hot here and the sun can be so intense....Hmmmm

You lucky, lucky girl! Mine has 8 leaves, about 1' tall. Leaves didn't burn too much here, maybe 'cause I had it on the front porch/roof over.

Kristi: In our garage and enclosed breezeway, it is about 10 degrees warmer than outside temps, so yours' should be ok until you can get them inside.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine bloomed well, but I also had the leaf burn problem. It made the plant not look very nice most of the time. Mine was under the shade of a tree from about noon on, so maybe it needed more shade. I have it in Jim's shop and will try again with it next year. This plant got about three foot tall and had at least a dozen peach colored blooms on it right before our brug season was over. The blooms hadn't changed color yet when I took this picture. I had moved a lot of the brugs up by the garage for protection from the cold.

Congrats on having a pod Kristi. Hope it will give you a seed or two that aren't lacking chlorophyll.

I never got a Y. Maybe next year it will take off.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm glad I saw this thread before I forked out a lot of money for Snowbank. I am disappointed, though. It was the one brug that I was longing for. I'm glad that you all were honest about it's shortcomings. Thanks, Nat

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Well, that sure is disappointing that you didn't get the results you wanted, datdog! Maybe your seed pod will generate a better, stronger species? If so, it would be fun to grow; otherwise, I think I'll follow your advice and not bother with this one!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I bought Snowbank early last summer, kept it in the shade house until the weather turned too cold. It has been in my small greenhouse for about 6 weeks. Hasn't Y'd and is a little more than 30" tall. I would like to see some blooms, but I guess i wouldn't be too disappointed not to have blooms because for me the foliage is sooooooo pretty. I had no burning leaves problem and we had a very hot summer. Donna

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I wonder if this one will just do better if it has a lot of humidity. We were really hot this summer, some humidity, but dry for the most part. That might be the trick to making it look good all the time. I'll bet you have tons of blooms next summer Donna and it should have some good height to it too.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Shirley your plant looks great. It really was loaded with blooms. I don't think the humidity matters that much. Mine lived just inches away from the pool. I think it's just a rotten plant LOL..... If only it didn't burn it would be my all time favorite.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

I am thinking it needs all day dappled sun or shade, not direct sun, Shirley I don't think humidity is the answer because we live in what I refer to as soup. The one I had all summer looked terrible, till I bought it in, now it is getting beautiful in the winterhouse with the growlights just out of it's reach. The one I just got from Alice (Thank you, Thank you) Is at the greenhouse under the shade of the new hybrids, and it is growing like crazy. So I think your first thought was the right one, no direct sun. Perfect for a shade garden?

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Hummmmm.......do we have a ray of hope here? I have several places in my yard that's shaded all day. Guess I'll get one and try it anyway. I'll have to remember to keep everyone posted and hope yall do the same.
Dee

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Tracey mine only had about two hours of dappled shade and still burned. I'm wondering if it will do better in the ground? Glad to hear yours is doing so good in the GH. I bet it's a beauty

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, jeez......how many unhappy people are here because of ME????? Just curious, how many of you are the ones that I sent the Snowbank plants to? Mine aren't all that tall, but both have bloomed. I kept them in the shade pretty much all the time after I bought them, not because I thought it was the thing to do, it was because I was too freekin' lazy to find another place that was sunnier for them. I guess laziness has it's virtues at times, eh? :>)

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Tell you what Anna........if you have any more, you can send me one....I don't mind being unhappy.......LOL
Dee

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

AnnaZ: I love mine! You didn't MAKE anyone buy, they all wanted them!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

My snowbank has never burned. It is still small but is doing just great. I have it outside even now that is getting in the 40's at night. It was in total shade all summer on my porch. I just love the foliage. It is so beautiful. It really jumps out at you.

I can't wait to see what you get Kristi from your pod!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

AnnaZ you SURELY can't think I'm unhappy with what you did? NO WAY!!! I'm thrilled and VERY thankful you took the time to send me and everyone else a Snowbank. You saved me a lot of money. It's the plant that makes me NUTS!!! I think Terra Nova should have trialed this a bit more before releasing it. I was one of the lucky ones and only paid five dollars. I feel bad for the people that are spending 20+ and finding out how bad this plant burns. I guess that's my gripe.

Once again I thank you Anna....

Kell do you have room for me at your place? I think the climate would be good for me as well.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Anna, mine was in almost full sun and it didn't burn. I wonder if it's our high humidity that helped? and again, thanks for getting them for us!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I love mine too, Anna. I still can't believe you went to all the trouble that you did to make it possible for us to have them. You're a real trooper! I have it inside.

All summer, it was on my deck (partial sun) and I noticed that every time I watered heavily, the white part of the leaf would get translucent, then just sort of disappear. Even inside, I watered a few days ago and last night I noticed a spot on the largest leaf. I'll take a photo when I get home. Maybe this one just can't take lots of water.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Kristi. I do not even have room for me at my place anymore. One of these days my DH is going to get fed up and toss me and my plants out into the street. I have brugs all over the house and seed trays on every window sill and still making more.

Why you may ask since I have no room outside for anymore!! Well, I have a chance at renting 2 garden plots about 30 minutes from home and I won't find out if I have gotten them till next year. I must be ready! If I do not get them, you will all hear a very sad cry where ever you all live!!!!

Tracey, my plant is special since you gave it to me. I'll keep fighting until I find the right environment for her. Maybe she will be the best one I have for the back deck that is shaded all the time. Wouldn't it be great not to have to give one of them sunshine.....

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Hounddog,I'm happy as a pea in a pod with mine, course I'm always happy!!It was great of you to get us all one!I remember thinking, I was glad that it was not me doing all that mailing! Thanks Anna, you are a sweetheart!
( Love your Website!)

I have a couple of pix in my little disposable camera to take, so I'll shoot off one of Snowbank and all you brug fiends that are more in the know than I am (wouldn't take much) can tell me if mine is doing good, poor, or horrid. I think they are kinda neat, and they are the only 2 brugs I have not denuded of their leaves. They got aphids too, had to spray them, so I guess they showed me!
