More pod woes

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I saw this just after the big frost here, it is the only pod that split. The peduncle is green and it does not look ripe. It has been on 4 months so it could be ripe. I assume it is hopeless now to keep it on till the peduncle yellows.

I wonder if seeds are still viable after a frost.

Gosh Kell, I am so sorry about the frosts for you, and all the loss, but it sure is interesting to look inside like that! Thank you for posting the pics, and again, Im sorry.

This is what it looked like just yesterday. I was hoping to keep it on then for awhile more. That is a towel in the background that I had over the top for protection.

Awww...hope you can get a couple good seeds, that was an excellent cross!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It was a good looking pod. Gosh, you must have been pretty darn cold out there. I'm wearing shorts still. LOL!!

Kell, Plant them!

Kell, that is a trait of Golden Lady. If you peel the thick pith away, you will have seeds. I decided to leave a Golden Lady pod on the tree after it started splitting like that. Within a week, it had completely disintegrated and fallen off the tree. If you don't collect them when they start splitting, the pod will split completely open and the seeds will fall on the ground. The penduncle thingie rarely turns yellow on my Golden Lady pods.

This is good to know. Will have to watch next summer if I get any pods on mine. Shoot, by next summer, I will have already forgotten this bit of info ten times over...LOL!!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

OH! This IS good to know! Thanks Cala!

I dont think, that the seeds are damaged unless you had severe frost that night.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Crossing my fingers for you Kell

Kell, you had a frost??? We've had more frost so far this winter than the last two winters combined. Hope its not going to be a bad year. But we've had lots of sunshine too.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Susie, that is very interesting and something that I had never heard before. Kell, show us what the seeds look like.
Are they brown at the time the seedpod splits?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Mine do that even in the summer. I had to really watch GL for the pods to start splitting. I had some that split this past summer and I just watched them to see what they would do, they just disintegrated right there on the tree. Most pods if left will turn all yuckie and brown and dry up, but not these, they fall apart!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK Frannie, I opened it. The flesh is weird but the seeds look ripe! I will have to watch the others, I really did not notice this before with the others...... but that means nothing! LOL

They look great kell!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Glad to see this Kell! They sure do look nice!

When yall open your pods... do you use a sterile knife, or what? Not that I will have any seed pods anytime soon, just have been curious how you open them.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Beautiful! This is something good to know about Golden Ladys' seedpods. I would never have guessed, would have kept them on forever.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Kell, I know you have must have been so happy when you saw the seeds were brown. I think they look great and will produce some beauties for you.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Shelly, I use a sterilized box cutter knife. I used to use a straight razor blade until I decided that it was just a matter of time before I cut my fingers off. LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Great Kell. Hope you grow something fantastic from these seeds.

Nice looking seed pod Kell. Hope you get some great babies.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Thank you Liz! LOL Im glad you made that change BEFORE you lost a finger! I would guess its kind of like cutting a fruit?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Liz, I just rip them open with my hands and cleanout the inside of the pod. Are you worried about the seeds getting a fungus?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I also just open them with hands/fingernails. I have used the box cutter too, but I keep forgetting where I put it the last time I used it.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie, that is exactly what happens to me. I never remember where I put things . . I guess I need to organize myself better. If I were opening a pod, I would just wash my hands and use my fingers to get them out because I am going to be handling them anyway in the separation process and the planting process. Kell has taught me . . always use clean hands all the time even when handling seedlings.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I open a lot of sang pods. They are very thick skinned and don't have a tendency to get soft like the others.
Yes Shelly, it's like cutting around the outside of an orange.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Did you see my big sang pod pic Liz?? It is a good size. But not ripe! The only one my orange sang ever made that I saw! I am going to open it and plant it tonight but I bet none will come up.
