I posted this in the health forum as we've had an ongoing discussion about teflon cookwear, and aluminum cookwear. I thought I'd also post it here as aluminum in foods is a big concern, being linked to Alzheimer's.
"I discovered something that ruined my cooking day yesterday. At the last minute, my housemate wanted a cherry pie, and I asked her to bring home frozen pie shells from the grocery as I was short of time to make piecrusts. First, I was dismayed that all the edges of the crusts were broken... but she assured me these were the best of what was left in the store.
When I opened the package and picked up the broken pieces, they were grey on the underside!! It was aluminum powder from the pans!! If the shells had not been broken, I would never have known.
The brand was Marie Callender's, and I have filed a complaint.
I threw away the broken chunks and hoped for the best with the rest of the crusts, saying we should not eat much of the crust when the pie was baked. The part of the shell in the rest of the pans didn't seem to have that aluminum residue, and I rolled them out a little thinner, one for the botrtom and one for the top."
