HELP - is it too late??

St Peters Village, PA(Zone 6a)

I still have some tulips to plant for a client. It has been seasonally warm here this fall, what are my chances of success?

SpringOaks Don't know about your zone but in mine they will still do just fine you are on the end of things though so get um outta the bag and in to the ground. They need time to grow a bit before hard winter sets in. Ernie

I think it would be ok-as long as the ground is workable and not FROZEN yet! ;)

If the ground is frozen use a pick and make a hole or drill a hole with a large auger bit and replace the removed dirt with baged unfrozen topsoil or planting mix. If there is a will there is a way.

Do give them some bulb booster in the hole it will pay off in the spring. Ernie

Frozen ground is too late.

Maybe in Ireland but not in Washington if you get the bulb into soft dirt like I outlined above. Or do you think I was Just lucky?.

Win or lose the bulbs won't bloom well or do much in the bag.

SpringOaks did you plant or did you decide it was to much hassel?

I just planted 12 dozen daffs I bought right and planted through 2 inches of frozen ground. I have sandy loam dirt not heavy wet stuff. Anyway took my troybuilt to it and beat it to loose and the put bulbs in with a hand bulb planter.Ernie

Thanks all. Since gardening is my living I don't get to check this site often and was delighted to get responses. When I finish installing outdoor Christmas decorations today at the retirement village where I mainly work I'll be "off" til spring!! Then I get to hang out here at Dave's. Ernie, I admire your perseverence. I did just make it in time - planted Dec 1. Ground froze yesterday(12/3) and is not workable in most places now. Snow and rain on the way for tomorrow, good for the newly planted. Bulbs were 75% off, couldn't resist and planted another 400 crocus and 150 muscari for myself and 150 assorted tulips for customers (some for me of course). I don't usually plant tulips as they're not terribly reliable here, the critters usually get a lot of them. I dipped them in Bonide Bulb Saver (Thiram) this year. Supposed protects from mice, moles, basal rot and decay - fingers crossed. Will report on its reliability in spring. Looking forward to meeting more of you. "See" you all soon.

SpringOaks rmemember when you were little and your parents said Cant never could do nothing well mine did. I think sometimes I have success with some things not with brains but by being a stubborn bull dog oh who knows why you win or lose at things you try that should work.

Good luck with your planting hope the critters go easy on the tulips. Ernie
