bopjg -

Let me look in the morning at the ones creeping out the back fence from behind the pond. I don't dig them here in 9b, so I'm not even sure how or when to do it.

They need to be moved anyway because the are encroaching on the pond equipment. I'll do some research on how to do it and when is best (these still have leaves and are fairly small so I can probably get at them).

i move my cannas when completely died back or in the spring to give them time to restart root growth. hope this helps some.

I read about a bazillion different links on Cannas, everyone seems to have a different tecnique, but I've decided that here in 9b I can dig them now.

What I think I'll do is dig them, bag them, send them to you for postage.....how many do you want, like how many pounds? a #7 USPS priority box would probably be about 6 pounds at $10-$12 I'm guessing until I go see how big the roots rhyzomes are on these little guys or a smaller #4 box would be probably $5-$6.

Some people apparently grow them indoors overwinter, some store the rhyzomes in peat in the basement, seems to be a lot of choices.

Here's some info:
Winter CareWinter care is needed because cannas are very frost sensitive. If you live in a temperate climate, frost protection is minimal since freezing temperatures will not persist. Throughout winter you can leave your cannas untouched. You do not need to fertilize your canna because it will not flourish or flower during the winter months. When spring arrives, cut back the old shoots and new ones will soon grow. If you live in a zone that has harsh winters, it is best to overwinter your canna in a greenhouse or store the rhizomes indoors during the winter. It is simple to move your plant indoors if it is already in a pot. But if it is in the ground, you will have to transplant the canna into a pot to store it over the winter. If uprooting and repotting canna sounds like too much work, another option is to overwinter rhizomes. As soon as freezing whether threatens to arrive, dig up your canna and separate the rhizomes with only tips from the rhizomes with shoots. Remove all soil from the rhizomes and store them in a paper bag with shredded paper, peat moss, or some other dry medium. Restrain from watering the rhizomes to prevent rotting. When spring arrives, you may plant them in the ground and they will quickly grow.

Just let me know if you are interested in a couple or a bunch before I dig them.

I'm editing this message to insert a recent link discussing Cannas closer to your zone.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Canna "Technicolor" which is a lot like Tropicana, will produce some striped offspring. I've tried it. I grew seedlings for someone one time. However, as you know, I don't have any seeds of Technicolor right now. :-(

Michele, :-)
