For the last 3 nights we have had a very heavy frost and this morning when I took the kids to school it took me ages to scrape the ice off the car. Now it really feels like winter is on its way! Still the sun is shing warmly so guess where I am headin ?!! ;) LOL
Its c-c-c-ooooooollldddd
Brhh..It is cold in here too. Day before yesterday we had minus 8,5C. And today we have -5.
and we got pretty much snow too.
the allotments?
;)
+4 C here and a lot of wet snow. We got tons of it yesterday here in the Southern coast area.. I made a few snow lanterns but they melted today.
What's heavy frost in UK scale btw? :)
the allotments yep! with my new camera. Not in a digging mood today cos I want to play instead ;) I have set up a series of feeders feeding them seeds, nuts and suet and already theya re attracting alot of birds and they go down very quickly. When I drove up I could here the nuthatches calling and I could see some longtailed tits, coal tits and a Goldcrest around the feeder. I decided to use my car as a hide as many times birds dont seem to mind it if you stay still inside. Today however, it would seem that noone wanted their picture taking :(( they all flew away and didnt come back. I could hear the woodpeckers and Nuthatches taunting me in the background and all I managed to photograph were a few tits :((
I dont know how to approach this. I dont know whether to build a hide or to keep using the car and hope that the birds will get used to it?
Anyway I left in a huff and went elsewhere. Ended up at Doffcocker lodge looking for Reed Buntings and Great Crested Grebes but they decided to keep until cover too!! :( the life of a bird photographer is never a smooth one!! LOL
I think heavy frosts are worse than snow as it is harder to clear from your car and the roads are imperceptibly dangerous!!
Cold here too! I have trouble sleeping some nights. Was up at 5 this morning getting myself a drink and biccie to make myself go over again. I always switch off my heating at night. But it was cooooooooold! So I switched it on again.
Heavy frost here in Northumberland as well but it cleared by mid morning so not too bad. There is lots of salt on the roads as my car windscreen needed constant washing. I have been out more in the garden the last few days more than lately. Thought that it was time to tackle some ground elder, I know that I will never win but can but try.
Evert do you mean how bad are our frosts or what we condider a hard frost?
Our frosts generally are no more than -2c or -3c. A hard frost would be -6c or less. Last year we had -10c for a few days. 2001 we had 10 days of -12c if I remeber right
Colder here too yesterday, but no frosts..yet.
do you get much hard frost and snow during your average winter down in dorset sue?
not cold here. I'll get the temp later
not here either. No frost last night and It was raining here earlier.
+8 just now
Oh my, you're having real hard frost there :)))
It was up to -25 C in Lapland today :/ -1,8 C here right now. Weather has been really nice all day, I woke up to a beautiful red sunrise and sun has been shining all day. It is also icy outside which makes the way to school more exciting ;)
Evert!! are you saying we are nesh!! LOL
Oh to be young and find slippy paths exciting!! LOL I stopped finding it fun the day I dislocated my knee and started to dread it the fourth time my knee gave way :((
:D
A lot of small accidents happen here with older people who break their bones when it's icy out there.. I have learned to walk carefully on ice, so I very rarely fall.
I never learnt to walk properly on ice, my balance is lousy :(( so us old people have to be very careful !!:))
have some fun on me though Evert ;)
I remember pouring water on top of ice down some steps to a public bridge, one very cold icy year,to make a slide.
Didn't even stop to think about poor people who had to walk down them!! Oh the calousness of youth.
No,we don't get much in the way of frost here, not normally anyway,(that'll tempt fate)
the same year that we had that really cold weather the backwater froze over, and I remember 100s of people skating on it, my bro of course had to be different and take his bike on it, and ended up with a cracked skull!!
It was only 2c here this morning.
We used to throw buckets of water down a slope near my house. So many people skating really polished it. Skating isnt the word. We used to run as fast as and then our feet in line as we slid down the slope.
It's much warmer than that here. This morning was absolutely tipping down with horizontal rain, but this afternoon was blue sky and sunshine :)
We had a long sloping drive at one place i lived and we'd turn that into one long slide *g*
..and there's a local hill where we've taken all the different types of sledge over the years. Everything from builders' sacks, through tea trays, to a wooden one we built (never v successful, except for one year when the snow was deep but crisp) and a new fangled plastic one that goes like the wind
We used to put candle wax and stuff on the runners. Never was sure whether that did anything
Still no frosts overhere..we hade a few nightfrosts this october down to -4C. But now it's very soft for the time of the year quite a while. Temps hanging around +12C. Beware....I think all the time...brrr... sure the cold is coming when you don't expect it anymore to come.
I want the cold now! I hate this weather. Just when we had nice snowy weather it started to get warmer again. It was +6 C today MORNING. All snow and ice has melted again. Independence day has to be snowy.. pretty please, send the cold and snow this way ;)
Yo ucan get it back in February when I am sick and tired of it, ok?
LOL Evert
We had our first really hard (for us) white frost this morning. But it must have been just a ground frost as my thermometer doesn't show it going down much below 0C
Hey Evert..I'll gladly send the cold, if it ever gets here, to you...would be a pleasure...haha
Today temp was around freezingpoint and now...at night temp is going down to -8 C....brrrr cold but cosy.
we had a very cold night and I forgot to cover my Pelargoniums which are still outside. It will be thumbs up or thumbs down in about 10 minutes
Oh Mark...what did it became? If they were in pots ....I'm afraid it'll be thumbs down. I have electric lights on in my outside cupboard..temp lowered at night inside but still is +5C at night. There was a little sunshine today and I've let some fresh air in. I hope it'll helps. I've very nice seedlings growing in it. It's still freezing here now at 5.00 p.m. It's nice to have this weather because it's christmastime...but in january I hope it's over.
they are species Pelargoniums and they are OK even though their leaves were frozen hard. It hasnt risen above 0 today. They will have to go on their winter holidays soon.
