This hummingbird is often seen one my Chinese Jasmine, my Lucuma, or my Jacaranda. Itīs always on one of these 3 places (which covers my bedroom window and my porch, something around 4 meters long). It fights fiercely for this territory against other hummingbirds.
Now I will tell you why I donīt like this bird. I donīt see it getting nectar from my flowers, though. I have a huge pink/yellow orchid, but it doesnīt seem to atract it. It seems to, mainly, steal the nectar from the Sea Hibiscus planted around this building (id doesnīt suck it from the middle, it opens a hole with its bill outside the petals). It not only doesnīt help me pollinating my flowers, but also spoils other plants - which, also, keeps other birds away.
And, dude, it sings so bad! It starts singing hysterically at 6 am. I hate waking up with that noise. Then it keeps singing all the day until night.
Beautiful like a flying flower. But besides that, I can only complain about this "guest" that ended up taking over *my* apartment :^P
I guess I live in its territory
If you really don't like it then stick a stamp on it and send it to me. I will give it LOTS of TLC and it can have anything it wants in my greenhouse!
I can have anything here too, but it doesnīt take it! It just flies around, sing terribly, and when itīs bored, it flies to another place to get something to eat :^P
If all of our problems were only as bad as having a bird singing too much...
8-)
Actually, I can sympathize. Around here, its the squirrels. Everyone talks about how cute they are, but I have a hard time seeing that when I'm replacing bedding plants and putting potted plants back into the pots! AARRRGH!!!!!

AMEN, dogbane!!! At my folks house (in WI), the squirrels will even chew through the wires of Christmas lights and take the light bulbs out. They are cute, but can be quite a pain. I think the little beggars have chewed on the arm of my nice teak bench. There are bite marks, but I don't know if it was squirrel or rat--about the only difference between them is one of them lives in a tree!
LOL Monochromatico! My "King" hummer loves to lie in wait and then buzz me in best light saber fashion. He is quite funny. You can spot him sitting quietly in the hanging plants waiting for someone to get close. His family can come around but the hummer family from a couple of trees over is decidedly NOT WELCOME! Neither are other birds or large dragonflies. He does his pollinating job though. Good hummer. He does not seem to keep his colors straight though. My white reed orchid now is a bit on the pink side.
Thereīs a smaller bird that drinks nectar too. A pretty one, with yellow wings, white face and a black stripe over the eyes. I like hearing it singing, it gets rhythm and sounds way better than the hummingbirds... but since the humms stabilished their territories around here and kicked out other birds, I never heard that tiny birds songs again.
The migrating birds seem to ignore the hummer with dignity, I have noticed. They just eat their fill and ignore his angry protestations. If it is birdsong you are looking for, I have a mockingbird that I will happily put a stamp on. He can do anything from canary to sick cat.
I came face to face with a hummer this summer. I was bent over checking my flowers when I heard it. I swear it sounded like a huge bee,(knees shaking at this point) I looked up and I swear it was no more than a foot away from me. First thougnt-WOW- second thought-OMG I hope he dosnt go for my eyes! lol We stayed that way for about 10 seconds. It was cool and much better than the ones at my SILs house, hers like to dive bomb her, I really believe they love her reaction(jumping and screaming), but she keeps those hummingbird feeders filled up everyyear.
thanks for the giggle :)
Very brave and bold hummers will grab strands of long blond hair and try to make off with them for their nests. They do not seem to mind that they are still attatched to one's head LOL. Hair is actually very bad for hummer nests so I put out more appropriate materials for them to use.
:D
that is a gorgeous hummer, good pic.
Thanks for all the comments. Now that summer is starting, they are kinda busy with all the flowers around here and stopped bugging me. *Now* I like them :^)
LOL Boy are you lucky I wish summer was starting here
