For bonsai, I believe you would start with something much smaller. The plant here was likely not intentionally distressed, but being at the entrance to the local "swim lagoon" it was probably picked upon by patrons. If you want bonsai, try this one from the bonsai exhibit at Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA
