OK all you hibernating Canucks out there. It's just way too quiet here. Has anybody gotten any seed catalogues yet? Which are some of your favourites?
If your a member, but not a subscriber at DG, please subscribe. It's not that expensive. It could save you money on seeds, and later plants if you ever get to putting up a list. And it's a long winter. You miss out on a lot when you can't see what's going on and can't respond to threads.
Hello out there.....
seed catalogues
I'm into the throes of hibernating, echoes!~!......thinking about planting some seeds in Feb., next yr...that way I'll be ahead of the game! Yes, I have received some catalogs already...one of my favourites is......Plantworld Seeds, Botanic Gardens and nursery, "A Plantsman's Paradise".2004, from the UK. I don't even remember how or where I found it?? it's a keeper! E.
Here a good online seed source/catalogue (based in BC):

I think its the frost level temperatures. They slow down that part of the brain that engages in growing things. Until a critical undegree day maximum is reached (generally sometime toward the end of January) when this self same part of the brain rebels and the seed catalogues start to arrive in armloads. Then just as the orders are completed and sent (say the first week of February) we get snowed in for a week or so. Perhaps this part of the brain also is regulated by circadium (sp?) rhythym as well. Anyway hibernation seems to be our game right now. Snowing like a banshee here. (This is good - I need some more cover for my babies out there). Have to haul all the Christmas stuff out of the cellar and start decorating this week or skip it altogether. No time once the crazy season starts which is pretty much next week. That would be the week that many people find anew that there are only three weekends in December before Christmas and gee no we can't fit 14 more christmas parties in that day. But I ramble .... Happy hibernating everyone.
So PC, have you ever ordered anything through eseeds.com? They have taken some pretty heavy raps in the Watchdog.
I'd like to get my hands on a cat from Jelitto. I emailed for one last spring and some rep in the US sent me a 2002 copy. I have the garden books from Leo Jelitto and Wilhelm Schacht, a 2 volume encyclopedia. They were less than half price in a book club sale. Still deciding if I'll keep them.
So what Canadian or American seed catalogues do you already have? Is everybody anxiously waiting, like me?
No haven't ordered there yet and yep not a good feedback on them in the GWatchdog. Good Catalogue to look at but I guess just don't order there LOL.
Thompson and Morgan...they now have a station in Canada...we still have to spend US money!.bummer!
So how do you find TM in Canada?. I went to the website yesterday and ordered a cat, but I think it was American.
what they mean by this, echoes.....is......for the very first time at T & M, there is a Canadian outlet, or station, as I mentioned, that now deals with T & M from the UK.....although the goods are still in American funds. The catalogue is still US Or UK.
OK, thanks.
It seems to me that my catalog from OSC last year had a section at the end which was T&M all priced in Canadian funds but perhaps not a large enough seclection for the voracious appetites of DG'rs.
Yes, we're always looking for that elusive, wonderful, new variety of something we have to have. I need to temper that plant collector part of me with the artist that says just put the colour and texture in a nice picture. But it's fun to have a few plants that you really appreciate as stars, or the ones that you come to see up close .
That is a lovely picture echoes, what is it?
I received my first catalogue today and will start looking at it shortly. I have already started some slow growing perennials for next year. trailingon
That is a Campanula I got without a tag in 2002. trailingon, what catalogue came first and what seeds have you already started? I can hardly wait to plant some seeds.
I have that campanula, I got it from roselaine, don't know the name either. Elaine???
Yes, either takesimana or punctata, most likely a hybrid or cross. I thought it looked a lot like 'Elizabeth'
hi........maybe C. Poscharskana(Siberian bellflower).....that's it, I remember!
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/366/
you think?
You all continue to amaze me. I'm barely out of "you know that purple kind of bell type flower over there" to remembering its called Campanula. And there you are identifying umpteen different varieties like latin was your mother tongue. I of course have no idea what it is but it is beautiful. Is there a latin botanical primer anywhere on line where I could improve my skills in the wee small hours of the night.
Another night owl...you and I are the same jagonjune!
Both for the hours and the latin ;)
I did get a Plants of Distinction Catalogue...I am
going to order a few goodies from it!
I can't speak for anyone else, but the botanical language thing was a gradual learning process. It would evolve from an interest in a particular plant, that led to the whole genus. It was the only way to be sure which plant you were researching. I borrowed library books at first, and when I wasn't satisfied with that, I started buying a few. Now I have a pretty good library. The knowledge is not for showing off, it's for clarification, a common language for all gardeners to communicate in, whatever region or country. Even good plant tags have botanical names on them.
As for that Campanula, its not C. poscharskyana(Dalmatian Bellflower) which is also a very nice plant, but a lower growing rock garden type, with wide open star-like flowers.
Lilypon, how did you get the Plants of Distinction catalogue?
Hi echoes
I know the value of the latin...unfortunately I'm just
haven't put the time into learning it yet.
I typed in "Plants of Distinction" in a search engine
and ordered the catalogue from their site. Now I am into
full time drooling! ;)
For quick reference you might find this sight useful. For me this is a gradual learning process, as I garden.

Thanks echoes! I'll be visiting this site often.
Me too thanks echoes
Has anyone here actually ordered from Plants of Distinction? Are they decent sized plants? I was awfully tempted to order from them this past spring but didn't get around to it.
So far I have only rec'd T&M and the T&T catalogues.
Check out the garden watchdog on Plants and T and T.
did that found this - Lapageria rosea
(Chilean Bellflower) Pam this one is for you and I see you have already ordered from Plants of Perfection. But this might be a challenge to keep you busy for a while LOL. By the way how is it coming with your parents reconstruction?
So what would you do with a Lapageria? cut it back and bring it in for the winter? very pretty flower.
Got a real prize the other day. Plants of Distinction catalogue came from across the pond. What offerings! I'm pretty sure I'll be putting in an order. Will post what I'm getting, if anyone wants to share with me, as it could be pricey and I won't need the whole packet on most things.
jagonjune ... we have almost finished salvaging what we can
and the carpenters have started their planning.
echoes I would like to go in on a order with you...if
this summer is busy at least the seeds will keep.
You will have mail.
Got my PD catalog too. I have to have sooo much. Do you think they can send plants here? That yellow and blue iris just has to finf a home in my garden. I am sure I will order way too many seeds. Let me know what you are interested in Pam and Echoes. Maybe we can do a prairie coop of a different kind.
Glad to here there is progress in your reconstruction, Pam. Send pictures with your new digital camera. (Santa is coming, right)
From what I've heard, it is very difficult to get plants from overseas. They take a long time to clear customs and all the permits and such, just don't make it worth while.
I'm going to find out what actual shipping costs will be for seeds, whether we would save much ordering together and re-shipping. There is another one I really want to try. Probably order from Jelitto also. These would possibly come from the American outlet, which is fine as long as the seeds are fresh.

Hi jagonjune
Santa is coming and fingers are crossed! I've sent you an
email :)
echoes...will be exploring the jelito site...shouldn't
do this to me....

Plants of Distinction charges a flat rate of 1.85 pounds to ship overseas. Jelitto said it would be about 10 euros for airmail or 22 for FedEx. They have a min order of 40 euros.
