A note on the internet from Kansas City.
Teens in the area schools have discovered angel trumpet, Datura and jimson weed. The latest thing is to make tea from these plants. Law enforcement is very concerned over this problem. Gardeners are warned to be on the alert for any stolen plants. Thanks, PRCastle
Brugmansias, angel trumpetDatura and jimsonweed
Scary.
Maybe Im wrong but, ummmm isnt this poisoness..its kin to Nightshade, omgosh what will they come up with next.
Yes... it can kill you and there is no way to tell dosage when playing around with teas. Strength of the alkaloides can very from plant to plant.
Good grief, this isnt good
4 kids here, tried it, they all were on respirators, muscles didn't make them breathe and hearts were irradic.
All alive today, but doubt they will try that again! On other end of town, so don't think they got into mine.
So it's not just in OK...its in OH too, omgosh! I wonder how they figured that out to do that? Im concerned, I have a teenager 17 but I dont think she even know's what kind of plants I have.
Thank God she hasnt been into the drug scene...I dont know if I could handle it, think she knows that too..*sigh*
I can remember when I was a little girl my mother talking about a girl that she had gone to high school with that died from eating Jimson Weed. Of course, I didn't know what it was at the time. There are a lot of poisonous plants though. When our oldest daughter was 5, a little boy in her Sunday School class died from eating oleander leaves.
Many common plants are poisonous, oleander is a perfect example.
THAT is why I hate being a young person who likes these kind of plants, there are WAYYYYYY to many people doing stupid *stuff* around, and they are like, you grow them plants for that huh? I would never do something like that, and it is a shame other people do! Think of that 18 year old that took it and chopped his, well, you know off and his tongue too. Now, that is the kind of stuff that scares me away from drugs, and I will never do any, point blank EVER! I just hope they dont ban these plants :(
It is a shame. But these kids are learning most of this from their access to the internet. Just do a search for Datura and see what you get. It is freightening to think what these plants can do. I can only trust that I've taught my children the dangers of these plants and many others. I tell them that all garden plants are poisonious and deadly....that way they will never have to wonder!
BB, one does not have to be young to do stupid things.
Right, John.
You're right, John. We have some stupid supposed be adults in this world also.
Will this soon mean that if our brugs arent under lock and key WE could be held responsible for any injury or deaths .
Or worse yet, banned from growing them at all ??
Funny story about stealing flowers !!!
When I was five years old we made May baskets at school. On the way home from school I picked flowers, just one from the rockeries that came down to the sidewalk. Four blocks to my house so I had a bursting basket by the time I presented it to my mother. She said how lovely and that my teacher must have a gorgeous yard to have brought enough flowers for all the children.I said oh no I picked them on the way home.
WOW !!!!! She grabbed my arm and the three of us, my mom, the MAY basket and I went to EVERY house and I had to apologize and return the flower I had picked. To make matters worse ALL of those homes were up two long flights of stairs. Would my mother walk across the grass to the next house, oh no, it was back down and back up to each and every house.Lesson learned because my mother took the time to teach me respect for other peoples property.
So for all of you that can snip a cutting or grab some seeds here and there--NOT ME !!! All I think about is all those stairs--- hundreds and hundreds of stairs !!That was 57 years ago and I can remember it like it was yesterday.
I have a GREAT MOM.
:D I know, There are alot of stupid people around here that are over like 21, (like the growers, that are on welfare driving around in a benz, paid for in cash) but when you think about a joint, you see a 16-18 year old getting high, am I wrong, plus she said "Teens in the area schools have discovered angel trumpet, Datura and jimson weed" Unfortinatly I know of like ten people who will not send cuttings to me, because I am under 18, or 21. I am afraid that next year they will discover the brugmansia and the garden plan I want to do next year the garden design goes right up to the road people walk up and down each day, they could easily pick a leaf on there way by. so, I am thinking of a sign to put up saying how toxic they are, along with the other plants so people are not scared to own one. I am not selling them because of this also. Except a few on ebay next year to cover the cost of fertilizer, and my irigation system. :D John
And yes you can find it everywhere. I found what I thought was a datura right in front of the SPCA in my county. With help from Happenstance I found out the seeds I harvested are D. Tatula. No one noticed or said a word, and it looked like it was planted in a very good spot (Not an accidental planting). From what I could tell tho, I was the only one to take anything off this plant. hhmm I wonder if I should call them and tell them what they have just in case, after I go get some more seeds. maybe. hmmm. Glad I already was aware of jimson weed just didnt know what it looked like till now and can keep a better eye on the kids in the neighborhood. Parent watch around here that just came to be. I know at least one parent on each block and we all watch each others kids, and all but one or two kids are great.
I think by "angel trumpet" in the original post, they are referring to Datura. Yes, Brugmansias are also poisonous, but it is the D. stramonium (D. S. tatula) that is more often misused.
That is what was taken by the guy that cut himself, a tea made from the unripe seeds
Yes that is scary...
This was prevalant when I lived in Lakeland, fl....and that has been over 10 years ago....teens were using them then...so it is not new.
Buttonwillow...I had a simular experiece when I was young...but it was an ear of corn my cousin and I stole through the fence. It was old field corn and Mama cooked it and made me and my cousin eat every bite of the tough stuff! Jo
I think in most cases... anyone that tries it once will never be tempted to do it again. Most of the accounts I've read have not been pleasant ones.
nope, I would think not, but then again, there are alot of people who do things like acid more then once, and I have seen a person, passed out almost brain dead, and then a month later, I seen the same kid take another slip, so you dont know, :(
