Beautiful bonsai! If it's yours, you sure know how to make one extremely attractive. I love the plants growing around the base as well as the pot and the wood. Treat for the eyes. Thanks for posting it.

Dear Roshana,

Thank you for your compliment. YEP, sure is, just one of my small collection of 160 bonsai. The plants about the base of the tree's trunk are mosses, see the following two detailed pics, and I believe that the spores [seeds] are available to purchase, but you shall need to do a Google search to locate address. [suggest Reindeer moss]
The mosses are indigenous to the Netherlands, but I strongly suspect elsewhere.

Do you grow bonsai?

Neat mosses! I've never seen any like those before.I don't grow bonsai, but I sure admire them! Thanks for the extra photos of the mosses. Very interesting.

Those are not mosses, each is a fungus (zwam) or mushroom (paddestoel).

I think they are both in fact lichens ( a close symbiotic association of two organisms, a fungus and an algae).
They each look like different species of Cladonia, a genus which includes the scandanavian reindeer moss.

You're absolutely correct duliticola, they are indeed two forms of Cladonia, [I also have several others] I simply used the term mosses so as not to distract from the tree itself and as they were collected by a buddy of mine [me being housebound] it seemed to be a satisfactory blanket solution.

Should I be so lucky and find a house with a garden [housing here in Amsterdam is on the scarce side] I would start to grow moss and lichen collections, and even create a moss garden of sorts, similar to the type that can be found in Japan.
