First Time

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I just pollinated my first Brug. I crossed my white monster with Gypsy Queen. I did two blooms. I was just wondering, do you have to do this for all blooms? If so, how can you possiably manage to pollinate all the blooms when there are so many? One at a time?

I am sorry, I don't get your question. You only have to pollinate the amount of blooms you want pods on. You may want to do a couple extra just in case a few do not take or drop before mature. I do several different pollen donors on each tree. So on 1 tree I may have 4 or 5 different donor pods.

Pollinating actually only takes me less than a second. It is the prep that takes the time. Harvesting the donor pollen. Making out my labels then attaching the labels as I pollinate. I can pollinate 50 blooms in a few minutes, it is tagging them all that takes the time.

If my recipient bloom has a short stigma that does not protude well below the anthers, I have to remove the anthers first before I pollinate. That takes time. I carry extra paintbrushes so I can change them if I think I got recipient pollen on my donor brush.

If I did not get your question, please let me know.

Each bloom forms it's own seed pod.Pollinate only those blooms on which you wish to set pods.Of course a hundred
pods on a plant, all pollinated with different pollen donors, would be nice. ;>)

Jan, can you repeat the cross, only this time use Gypsy Queen as the pad parent, and pollen from your white? It is a whole different thing when the cross is reversed, maybe growing out seeds from both will yield interesting results.

I sure hope someone can do something special with Monster Brug. It would be nice to have a color with all the characteristics of Monster. Quick extensive multiple Y branching, 100's of blooms, heavy scent, very hardy to 30 degrees and light frost, and sets pods easily. Grow to 15' wide and 12' to 15' tall each year. the only thing close I know of is Valley Misty Pink. She's a great one for growth and blooms too. Jan did I send you a piece of the Valley Misty Pink too?
