for rooting cuttings? I have a couple in cut-off 2 liter coke bottles, they seem to be doing fine and I like it because I can see when they are rooting, but it occured to me today that maybe they would prefer opaque pots- does it make a difference??
are clear containers okay
I have used them with no problems.
I've used just about everything from 5 gallon buckets to coffee cups. I don't think it makes a big difference.
I use coke bottles all the time. It might not be the best choice if the plants are out in the hot sun where the roots might bake.... But in the house their fine.
What great ideas! I have a bunch of glass milk bottles I could start my cuttings in. I've been rooting my new babies in plain water. Should I add anything? I just got some rootone, but I'm not sure if I should take a chance. I'm not too good at measuring. Thanks,
Bambi
I like clear plastic cups too, 9 or 16 oz, depending on what you're doing. that way you can see the roots starting much sooner and tell how wet or dry it is too.
They root just fine in plain water in a clear glass container, in my experience. back2back, I'd save the rooting hormone for something else! John
Bambi, are you supposed to measure rootone? LOL. I wet the end of my cutting and stick it in the rootone up an inch or 2 on 6 inch cutting. I make a hole in the wet dirt with a pencil (twisting it around to make a hole the diameter of the cutting) and stick the cutting in being careful not to wipe the rootone off. Then I press the dirt firmly around the cutting. I do not water the cutting until the dirt is dry for if I water the cutting in I water the rootone away.
Thanks Kell, I'm going to try the rootone. It comes in such a little bag. I guess you have to use the whole thing. Maybe I should take some of the cuttings I've already potted up & give them a dip in the rootone.
