Greetings from a newbie

San Lorenzo, CA

I just found Dave's Garden a few days ago...what a pleasant place. Have already learned quite a bit from the forums. I started making entries into my Journal here, and it's great fun.

I'm very new to gardening, and so far I grow everything in containers so that I can regulate the culture and sunlight as I learn what each plant and tree needs. I have herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, squash, a little fig tree, dwarf lemon and lime, mini roses, one grandiflora rose, plus a bunch of annuals that I'm trying to grow from seed. Everything's thriving except for a small aloe vera that I just can't please.

Thanks to everybody for sharing information and creating such a nice environment. I hope I can reciprocate!

Welcome to DG, Essensia! Have you found the Container Gardening forum yet? It sounds right up your alley!!!

For what it's worth, my aloe vera plant did best when I shoved it in the corner of my utility room counter, and forgot to water it for months on end. Seriously - it thrived, in low light, extremely dry conditions. Now of course, I'm not saying that's how every plant wants to be treated but you might try leaving it alone for a while. Maybe they're like cats....leave 'em alone and they're happy????

Interesting, go_vols...I'll try just leaving the aloe alone. I've probably been giving it too much sun and/or moisture. Guess I'm used to plants that are like dogs (love attention and get droopy if neglected) rather than cats.

Dori, live chat sounds like fun. Thanks!

Welcome, Essensia! I checked out your journal and it looks great! You already have quite a few nice pictures and entries in there.

Welcome to DG!

Thanks, Dave. In addition to your green thumbs, you and Trish and the regulars apparently have the "silicon thumbs" to keep this site healthy and growing!

Welcome, Essensia... glad to have you among us. I'm also relatively new to gardening, but have had LOTS of help here! (and I agree with go_vols, my aloe does best when neglected!)
