Sunset (Maya) pod

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Just picked the first ripe pod off Sunset. Should I plant them all now?... I'm assuming that most of them will lack chlorophyll and bite the dust. On the other hand... if they all germinated and survived... I'd be swimming in seedlings and have to trash some.

Good Luck PoppySue.

Gee, what a problem! My seedpods dropped off. Keep us posted.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

might as well plant them all unless you have a friend who will plant some out for you Sue. Then you may get lucky and get a few good ones. I have a pod off my Maya. I should plant them also!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey, Poppysue ~ great shot and good luck!!!

How did you know when the seed pods were ready to be harvested?

I have two right now that have been hanging around for a few months. I just don't know when they will show signs of wanting/needing to be be harvested?

Thanks :)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

poppysue, it would be worth to try. This year, I left a pod on my Maya, even though the pollen bearer is not known.
The seeds will be sowed out. If all of them will lack chlorophyll thats ok, but if some of them are green, my friend Doris will have and raise them and if there are variegated seedlings among them, guess who is going to keep them!!! LOL! It would be a miracle!

Monika, if there are some green seedlings from the Maya/Sunset seeds, would they carry the possibility of variegated seedlings? Thanks, John

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Sue,
I advise to just sow them now, also.
I have sowed severl pods of both Sunset and Snowbank.
Most to all grow white. But a few green seedlings to be worth growing out.

I had only one varigated seedling out of my Sunset pods ... which has now turned all green )o:
But I still think worth trying these pods as you have them.

Also, after talking over with Monika and others .. and growing both Maya and Sunset now,
I do not think Maya and Sunset same. I asked Tony Avent (Plant Delights who offers Sunset) the history of Maya.
He did not know it.
But growing both and observing closely .. they are two different brugs.

things like this can only come from someone growing side by side and comparing, thanks Alice!

edited because it seems I can't spell anymore:)

John, I dont know, if they will carry it. We have to try to find out. Before, I had sowed out only a few seeds from variegated plants. The seedlings were all white and died.
I neglected it for many years.

Thank you, Monika.

Seeds are planted. We'll see what happens. I suppose anything is possible....

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Let us know, when the first seeds pops up! I am very interested. I have to wait, my Maya pod is not ripe yet.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

good luck Sue!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I just counted, I have 10 seed pods on Sunset!
How long does it take for them to ripen? I'll be looking for people to help grow them out when they're ready, the first ones were pollinated in September.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Mine were pollinated in July and I just harvested the first one. It started to shrivel and turn yellow. I have another pod on it that's still green.

I picked a couple of EP pods today too. They were started to shrivel too but they were still as green as can be.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Ronna, September pollinations need here under my wintering conditions until March or April, before I will be able to pick the pod.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sue, I had the same thing happen with a pod and it actually fell off. Many immature seeds, still white and I planted them all. Yesterday one had germinated and was peeking through the soil. I have no idea why it would do that while still not matured, but at least I have one seedling from the cross.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Brugie, I have lots of pods abort like that. I've been planting the immature seeds regardless. I'm sure some won't germinate but I figure anything is worth a try.

I learned something new... how to stitch photos together :) This is the cross from this pod

Sue, what program did you use

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I must have snipped it off with my pruners ;)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I remember when I first joined here and saw a stitched photo that Susie did of about 12 passion flowers. I was so impressed! Still am, when I do more than 3 they get distorted too much.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Annabelle, I used IrfanView. I don't know how to do too much with it... it took me a while to figure this out.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Is it IrfanView v. 4.5? I may have to check this out...that is too neat what you did. Good job and lovely picture to boot

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

It's Irfanview 3.8... a freebie version. I downloaded it a quite a while ago but I've never really put it to use. I should spend some time playing with it to see what else it will do.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

This morning on my way up stairs to bed... I stoped to give the pod still on the plant a squeeze. It promptly dropped to the the floor with a loud thud and I let out a shriek of horror. DH and SS looked at each other and simultaneously said "Glad she did it and not me"... LOL!

It turns out this one is ready too. The tip was starting to shrived and the top part just gave away from the stem.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

Congrats can't wait to see what you grow out.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Glad it held on for you. My Butterfly x EP or Aurea Pink dropped off when I had to bring everything inside, it was only about 2" long, very green yet, so no way to save it..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Sue! I would have gasped also!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL! My heart would have skipped a few beats or more! Do you think these seeds need to be chilled before being planted?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Morph, brug seeds don't need chilling.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, tiG! easy to understand :)
