Snow in California

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I did not trust my ears, when the news was in the radio.
Then I saw the pictures on TV.

I remember a picture, Kyle posted last year , showing an old B. versicolor Orange Tree loaded with flowers and this picture, kell had send me once.

Would love to have a couple of those in Iowa. That is a lot of bloom and would remind me of snow. Great picture.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

What a beauty. I love the fragrance of V. Orange and I cannot imagine the fragrance this tree must have had.

Tremont, IL(Zone 5b)

Simply gorgeous!!! Wow!! I had no idea that Brugs got that large. Probably won't here in the midwest, but in longer growing areas - what a beauty!!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It is kells picture - made in California. I dont know, where!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Oh, to have blooms like that here in Ohio.....sigh. Wonderful picture.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ah yes, I went back twice this summer to this tree but I timed it when the flowers had almost passed so I coudln't get a good picture. It was taken in Hayward, 2 small cities south of Oakland.

Where was it snowing Monika? I know last week we went from 80 degrees to hail in 2 days. That was very unusual.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Kell, it must have been where these fires were burning.
Frank called me when the pictures of the snow were shown on tv news! We saw snow ploughs clearing the roads.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I wonder if it was in the mountains where they ski. We have 4 different resort areas in California for snow skiing. That is what is so great about here, you can be laying on the beach working on your tan and then jump up and go for a drive and in a 3 hours you are skiing.

I pray we get no snow where I am. I have this horrible feeling we all are in for a terrible winter.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

OMG hope I can get mine to grow that big. That's incredible.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

GEEEeeeee-YAWWWaaahhh-leeeee! That *is* incredible! I can aspire!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes it is snowing in Big Bear! it is located southeast up in the mountains 15 miles from where i live. been snowing there for almost a week now. the low temp in Big Bear is on the lower 20's at night. the Big Bear mountains is 8,000 + feet above sea level. it is in Southern not Northern California.

Hesperia is nearly 4,000' above sea level. we have not have snow yet, but lots of frosty days of late. our night time temp is in upper 30ish at night.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Glad to see you Ma Vie!! I am so behind on my emailing. How are you doing? Life back to normal after the fires?

So Monika is right, that was were the fires were, weren't they Ma Vie?

I didn't realize you live so close to the skiing resorts. Do you?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes, i do live close to the mountains. yeah life is back to normal. winds and cold weather LOL!

the drive up to Big Bear is about 20-30 mins. cuz of the winding roads. today is the 1st day, Big Bear is opened for the winter skying season.

am scared to go up there, specially now that the guard rails were melted by the fire. the road is two lane very curve road. on approaching the curve each driver need to give courtesy to allow the other car go by. very stiff cliffs to fall into :(.

edited to add: yes Monika is right about the fire and snow up there.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

hey lady, weren't you impressed with my map? LOL. I sure was.

I am afraid of heights so even with the guard rails I would be so afraid to drive up there. Are they afraid of land slides now without the trees?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, experts, my husband has finally decided he likes brugs after seeing this white one. Which one do you ladies think is the prettiest and best blooming white?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Kell, that is one of the main fear of authorities up in the mountains... huge, huge big boulders sliding down the road. they were worried of safety of local residents. more so when the rainy season comes around. most of the trees are gone. soil erosions will be the next problem. that is one of our main fear now, flooding when the rain comes around.

yeah that was a nice map, definitely not map quest??

sorry Sylvia, i do not know the answer. i have only grown Eric's white last year.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Minnigrannie,my first choice on a white is Cypress Gardens

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow , that is incredible.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am in love with my new white hybrid from Kyle. It has a huge flower!

If you want a double, get him Golden Lady. Mine was usually white and sometimes cream. Species is a great double white also.

What is the name of that one, Kell?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

US Conn Treasures is another good white. How about shredded white. Boy, it really smells great.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It doesn't have a name yet Sylvia. I keep emailing Kyle but I think he does not want to own up to it! LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It really is a pretty white. So ruffled and lady like. Hope you two get it named. It deserves a pretty name.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

That is very pretty. I like the ruffles. I had a U. Conn Treasure, but it died. I have a couple of Shredded White cuttings, but I'm not sure I care for the tattered look. lol

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

if that tree were in my yard, I think I would have to build a shrine around it and prolly charge admission too. stunning..... cheryl

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Even in North Carolina we can have zones from 8 down to 4 in the mountain tops. I live in 6b but because of the warmer weather we have nowadays, it is more like 7a now. Darius is also in the same zone but she has a lot less rain, usually. We live in a temperate rain forest, actually. This year was probably the rainiest I remember. I'm sure we'll go over 100 inches this year.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can't imagine that much rain. Bet it is lush at your house Woodspirit!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Brugie, too much rain this year was worst for my plants than the previous year when we had drought. With so much rain this year many plants and trees had fungus. I lost many plants and bulbs to too much rain and lost none from drought. Too much of either is bad.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You are right. We had very little moisture this year and even tho we don't have to worry about things turning to mush, we do have to water a lot just to keep them alive. Hopefully next year will be a better year for all of us. I would really hate to see Monika have to go through another period of heat like she had this year. Made me sick to look at her brugs so badly wilted.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

We've had a lot of rain this year also, and nearly all of my bearded iris have rotted. I don't have much luck with them here anyway. I think our weather is just too warm.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That will make more room for brugs Sylvia. Brugs bloom more anyway. LOL!!

heber springs, AR(Zone 7b)

that is a beautiful brug monika. i want one just like it. we have a long growing season in arkansas.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Minigrannie, I noticed that the irises did not do as well when I lived on the coast, zone 8, than they do here, in zone 6b. However, while we had a lot of spotted leaves, I don't think any rotted away, thank goodness. The blooms are bigger and color is more intense here.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

werewolf, the picture was made by kell in California. She helped me out with pictures for my cataloge.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Monika! It may be my pic but not my giant brug! We have huge brugs here in yards. Usually they are yellow ones. They take over quickly. People prune them like crazy to keep them in bounds. But no exciting ones. Just yellow, Frosties, single and double whites.

The owner of this one told me last year that it was only I think 2 years old. A neighbor had gotten it in Hawaii and brought it back. He never fertilized it or even watered it much. In fact lots of giant ones here that I have asked about, the owners say they do not fertilize them. But they are all in the ground.

I never see a tree shaped one either here, just huge bushes. I think it is because people do not know they will grow in a tree shape and the few frosts we have kill off the tops and make them bush more.

Can you imagine one of Monika's pinks this big? A wall of pink!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, why don't you try making a ground planted pink tree? People would drive by with their mouths hanging open.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Kell, Rubirosa in California would be worth a try.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am game Monika! LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Now all you have to do is get one Kell. Wouldn't it be gorgeous???
