Just beautifull! Love it..makes my heart jump.

In The Netherlands Calendula is called Goudebloem (goldenflower) and is the national flower of that country. It probably has something to do with the orange color which is the banner symbol of the House of Orange.

Petals of the calendula can be dried and used as 'false saffron' to flavor and color dishes such as rissotto and paella. The flovor is subtle but I cannot attest to how close it is to the flavor of real saffron.

The plant was still in bloom in my garden until November 8, just before the first hard frost. It is a longlasting cut flower, ideal for a fall fresh flower display.

They bloom year-round in my garden and reseed beside my tidying/deadheading (clearly I'm not as tidy as I think!) ... my holistic practioner got me started giving dried petals to my dogs for their separation anxiety. I mix them in their food. It has helped a lot.

Every once in a while, they'll come down with a mildew, and I'll pull the whole section and toss them. But they'll be back - without mildew - until the next time ...

I really like the the color and shape of this beauty, lucky you. I don't know if they would make it year around in zone 5 but just to have it for the summer would be great.

Wind, calendulas do great here. They are annuals, and can slow down at the hottest part of summer but bounce back and bloom into November. They also reseed themselves look crazy but are easy to pull up. There are quite a variety available in the seed catalogs but I think I like the basic orange the best.

That's a great photo, bp.

I have had a lot of marigolds that I plant each year but not one bloomed in Nove even though the package said it would.

Wind, I think you grow the French marigolds (genus Tagetes http://plantsdatabase.com/go/172/). The pot marigold is genus Calendula.

In my experience the calendulas can take much colder temperatures than the French marigolds although they won't survive our winters.

I think your right, but when I received them in a trade I was told they would bloom in the winter in my zone.

Kit, they probably would in a greenhouse. LOL
