Anyone know?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I had a bud that would have opened in a day or 2 break off. The anthers are not yet mature enough for fluffy pollen. Will the pollen get fluffy in a day or so or should I just toss this?

Also, anyone know how long it takes an EP pod to mature??

Thanks

Kell, I received some wilted blooms that were mature and one that wasn't, in the mail, so I opened them all up and let the pollen dry on the mature ones and watched the other one for two days. It got some fluffy pollen on it, but not like the mature flowers. Can't hurt to try.

Looks good to me.

It took 5 months for my 4 EP pods to ripen.

My fear Brugie is that even if it fluffs a bit it won't be viable and I will waste a good bloom on one of my special brugs. I guess worse things can happen. LOL. As if I have room for any of these seeds anyway.

Hi Gloria!!

Thanks Snow. I have one that has been on about 4 months and is making me a nervous wreck waiting. I am so afraid the pod thief is going to get it!

LOL........ maybe Plays! LOL. My pods suddenly disappear. I search the ground underneath and they never are there. I wonder if squirrels like to eat them?

LOL, ok now that is funny. Just wondering but would that make the squirrels squirrelly?? I hate when you make a mistake like that, I was trimming some back the other day, and looked down I had cut not one but two pods off....dang, dang, dang! Temper tantrum right in the middle of the greenhouse, I felt so silly when I realized I was being watched, but then realized it was ok they know I am nuts!

Kell, did you try the pollen? On daylilies it's easier to collect pollen before it's ripe and the anthers fluff out. I bring them into dry on the counter top and they're usually full of fluffy pollen in a couple of hours. Not sure if it would work the same for brugs... but it might.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I did Poppy and it was nice and fluffy 2 days later when I looked at it. And I stirred it well into the other pollen just in case it is not viable it will be attached to some that is!

I was thinking that this may be the best way to collect it for now when I snip the anthers off I get it all over for it easily falls off. That way you would loose none for it would become fluffy after you have it in your permanent container. I should do an experiment and make sure it is viable done this way.

I bet it would be viable. After all... pollen will last quite a long time in the fridge.

Kyle told me that pollen doesn't have to be frozen, that it will be good kept in the fridge for up to two years.

Really Shirley? I kept all my pollen over the winter in the fridge last year... and I didn't think it was any good. I threw it all out. I tried it with a few crosses at the begining of the summer and I never had any luck. If I had know that I would have tried harder!

I haven't tried it myself. I've got some stored in the fridge right now. I sure hope it will be good next summer.
