My Winterhouse

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

To save heating costs, all my plants are in this house during the winter. The double acryl glass isolates much better and is for that reason, easier to keep frost free.
All plants go dormant, from seedlings and cuttings upwards to old plants.

Sorry for the bad quality of the picture. Again, I forgot to switch from Macro to tele.

You must really know how to pack them!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

How big is that Monika? What would you say is the lowest temp it gets to in winter time?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Experience of many years! No,the truth is that I have to improvise every year again LOL!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Badseed, our wintertemperatures may go down to -20°C.
In the Greenhouse, it will be then between +3 - +5°C. The freezing point is 0°Celsius.

OMG I am so excited, this is my fist post on dave's :) Monika, can you even walk in there? :)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Yes, I do. There is a narrow path to squeeze myself through it to be able to check all plants.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well then BB7551 CONGRATS! and WELCOME to Dave's Brug Forum! We are glad you are here with us!

Look closely at that greenhouse BB7551, in it is all that our hearts' desire!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

John, you registered the 30th and are just now posting?? LOL!! great control.

monika, it looks great.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Hi there John. Good to finally see you here.
Monika your winterhouse is great. That's just what I need for up here but unfortunately the double wall is so expensive. Guess I'll have to start saving for the panels though as my house has gotten a whole lot smaller this fall. :)

southern, NJ(Zone 7a)

bonnie, the check just got there lol :) My grandmom will not use her CC on the internet she is still in the 18th centery lol

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Snow, these are 16mm panels ans very expensive here also. The isolation of the cheaper 6mm or 10mm panels is not sufficient enough for our climate. Best are 16 or 20mm panels. My house stays frost free for several days even by temperatures of -6°C, which is 20F.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Looks pretty full. Wish I could do just what you do, instead, I pack them into the house and we live around them.

Hi Monika, wonderful greenhouse, I am going to show my husband, he said he's going to build me something smaller than my greenhouse for my new brug addiction. What kind of heat do you use in this greenhouse? You mentioned that you let your seedlings go dormant, how old do they have to be to go dormant? And your cuttings do they have to be root bound? My mind thinks I have more room than I do, LOL, I keep getting more cuttings and I'm running out of room. I have some cuttings that have been growing since August, do you think I can let them go dormant this winter? Thanks for your help. Cathy

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Good questions, I'm waiting for the answer. I'll post my gh and the new improvement on a separate thread.

Monika,
...Your Winterhouse is very beautiful, If I had that I would probably move into it....no lol, I'm serious =)

Monika, I know the panels you use are more expensive but they are probably worth it because of what they save you in heating costs. I see you have them all snuggled in their for their long winter nap.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Monika, is that getting heat from the inside of the house or do you have extra heaters in there? It looks like it opens into your house.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Very nice Monika. I look at those pannels to and changed my mind very quickly when I saw the price. It doesn't get cold enough here. Thank for all the info.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Thanks to all of you.
Liz, it does not receive any heat from the house. I have a electric blower running, which has a very sensitive thermostat. The power has two stages - 1000 and 2000 Watts. I have set the temps by 8°C. When the 1000 Watts stage is not sufficent enough to hold the temperature I previously set, then the thermostat changes automaticly to the 2000 Watt stage. During the day, the Sun is strong enough to warm it up and the heater circulates only the air (440cbm/hr). I bought the heater about 9 years ago and have recommended it since then to everyone having a Greenhouse. The winterhouse is seperated from the house by a large glass door. The larger part of the winterhouse reaches far under the house roof. I hope,my explanation makes sense to everybody. My other two Greenhouses, which are much larger, are covered only with UV-stabilized plastic. Even when isolated with bubble wrap, the heating costs would be too expensive.

Monıka, your greenhouse ıs lovely!!!
I just met another German Monıka here, and she has huge brug trees ın her yard. She has been lıvıng here for about 7-8 years, just up and moved here alone....she goes to Germany for the Christmas holıdays though. I told her there was a very famous Monıka from germany who hybrıdıses Brugmansıas, she ıs stıll callıng them Daturas, I told her no, they are brugmansıas, and I even told her the German name. engelstroughen or somethıng.....When I get your book, ı wıll share wıth her. she doesnt belıeve me when ı have told her about the dıfferent brugs that you have hybrıdısed (the doubles etc)and are avaılable.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Pebble, that is very nice. Maybe she is willing to take cuttings from Germany for you.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

That look nice and cozy, Monika. It looks just like the greenhouse I want. I've been adding one to my Christmas list every year now but Santa still hasn't come through for me.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Poppysue, I would write Santa Claus this year a especially nice letter with the promise, to be very very kind all next year and place it under his pillow!!!!!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez... I think it would be a whole lot easier to snag the credit card from his wallet while he's sleeping and oder it myself - LOL!!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Now I see it. It's long and relatively narrow.
Is that your new guard kitten?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The size of the complete winterhouse is 5.75m x 8.75m.
The frame seen is 5.75m x 2.75m. The rest is intergrated terrace in the house.

The kittens guards the house as long as the battery is loaded LOL. A Owl accompanies the kitten. The owl stand in the entrance.

southern, NJ(Zone 7a)

wow! That is not as big as I had thought with all those plants in it :) that would be 19x29 about right? :)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

BB7551, about 400 plants are packed in it, the cuttings excluded. They are in seperate propagation beds right on the outer front wall.
1m = 3ft and 39 1/2 inches. I guess you came close to it.

southern, NJ(Zone 7a)

:D I will be cramming in 200 into my 14x24ft next year :)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

A winterhouse, crammed full with plants, has a large advantage: when you stumble, you will never hit the floor LOL! You will just get tangled up in plants.

southern, NJ(Zone 7a)

ROFLOL the way I read that was funny LOL

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It happened to me several times LOL!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

monika I can see it happening to me too! when you posted, I thought 'see what's going to happen to you' !!!
