Here is a seedling showing it's first flush of flowers. This was from a seed of Eric's that I received from Arlene. It's supposed to be a cross of Butterfly to an unknown.Oh well, they can't all be pink doubles.Compost it is.
new one blooming
JT, I never like to publically say anything bad about a person's seedlings and I think it is human nature to tell people that you like their brugs. I can't say that I've seen one that I don't like, it is just that there are better ones out there and probably a lot of great ones in this year's seeds to be grown yet. I know the kinds of brugs you have and this one doesn't fit in your class of brugs. If it were mine I would compost it for a couple of reasons...and that is because it is white and because it shows too much suaveolens influence. Other than that, it is a pretty brug.
I have composted a ton of brugs, and all the seedlings that have bloomed for me this year were white except one. it's pretty but i sure would compost it.
i've gotten rid or will be rid by frost of all my doubles except golden lady including tiara, HG, creamsickle, CDW, and species. i am merciless with singles too.
Brugie, you are too nice, lol..... let's practice... yuk, what an ugly brug, Ah, another common white. not another frosty, please!!!! lol...
LOL Arlene. I know, we should be totally honest here with the new brugs, but I'm so afraid that I'll hurt someone's feelings and what I think is great might not be to someone else and the other way around.
Most of my seedlings havn't bloomed this year.I should have some interesting stuff in the GH this winter.Of those that have bloomed, most were white, some unimpressive yellows, and a couple that I am still watching. That ugly white was posted to show that even Butterfly can throw some garbage.
LoL - I wish more people would post their uglies. It's nice to see what to expect from certain parents. We always see the great ones.... but I think the uglies are all part of the learning process too. I had quite a few whites from Isabella x Butterfly... plus a couple of Frosties.
Poppysue, that's the funny part i think, i'm not sure you can tell about the parents necessarily, like JT said. i do like the shape of his ugly white, lol, but there is only room for so many brugs.
JT i know you have beauties coming, can't wait! did you see the white seedling i asked permission from tig to compost? nice white, nice tendrils, but not really special.
Ms. Brugie, you do just fine! we all do have different tastes. i'm like you, i've been wanting carrot orange brugs more than the pinks. hopefully next year will be the orange year, this year there were a ton of great pinks.
I agree that one is not a keeper, and I think a thread of uglies would be fun.
Honesty would be refreshing! I have seen many seedlings posted, daylilies mainly where everybody says "I like it!" And I wonder, why in the world do you?
The day I post a seedling photo I would want real opinions.
Arlene, you are killing me! Why are you getting rid of nearly all your doubles?
I'm keeping doubles also. Want to try for double pink, can only get there from doubles x ? I grew a lot of seedlings, lot of Isabella x Butterfly, as I thought they had to be good. Most were white, short tendrils,grrr......
Arlene, oh Arlene, didn't you say you are coming to visit me?????
Well, my very first own cross bloom was also very nondescript white. But instead of composting it, I put it out by the street with a big sign on it "free angel trumpet plant". A nice lady who had no idea what they were stopped by and adopted it. I hate to compost something that is unspectacular to me, but for somebody who just wants a nice garden plant it would be fine. That is what I will continue to do with my seedlings that I don't want to name or distribute.
Kris, i just really don't like doubles and i have too many plants to take care of and buy fertilizer for. i might regret tiara, however i cut it off even with the ground and it is putting up new shoots. will decide whether or not to keep it later.
Weeds, send me mail....
Mary i've given away tons locally too. someday maybe some one will rescue some of the brugs growing in my woods.
I think part of the problem with some of the seeds is that even though we pollinate with a certain plant, the moths can come along and repollinate.....so what we might think is a butterfly x pink beauty cross is really a butterfly x frosty pink...and those suavenolens genes are STRONG!!!!
but at the risk of some people getting mad at me.....
There are people out there who are NOT serious collectors(can you imagine),and they like frosties and stuff that many people here turn their nose up at.And they take them, especially if the price is right(FREE)So before I compost stuff I always check with people who have mentioned that they like them, then they go to a good home and I don't feel I am contributing to brug abuse...LOL
But white suavenolens go to compost one way or another....just my personal little culling rule.....In fact every suavenolens is going to get composted unless someone gives them a good home......
If every seed came out a winner before long there would be nothing on earth but brugs because you certainly won't compost a winner. LOL
Really folks,"compost it"is just a figure of speech in most cases.I also give away many plants locally and even throw in some extras for my customers sometimes if there is room in the box.But as for that ugly sucker that started this thread, can everyone say LANDFILL?
LOL CC, tell us how you really feel about suaveolens!
