I'm not exactly sure who I got this from but I "think" it was Weeds..(sorry I can't remember)It came from the GA Round up. But anyways I got a thing that looked alot like a purple plum...but was told it was a passiflora seed pod.
It is kinda rotten looking, because I just left it out on the back porch to dry out. Guess that is what I was suppose to do with it.
Can someone tell me if I am doing this right? I mean am I suppose to let it dry out that way or should I break it open and take the seeds out of it and then let them dry out on their own?
Can someone help me out here?
Passiflora fruit?
Hi Mollybee, yes, that was from me and I thought they were supposed to be planted right from the pod. That is why I brought them that way. But, I really have never planted them from seeds so have no clue if that is correct information.
O you no!! I was just fixing to e/mail you! Hope someone comes along SOON! else I'll have mush instead of seeds! LOL
Thanks for the pod by the way :)
If it is passionflower fruit, I usually break open the fruit and then let it dry. Letting the fruit dry on the seeds seems to help with germination for some reason (the acid?). When I get ready the plant, I soak in orange juice overnight. Then I plant the seeds as normal. That way I get a high germination rate. The seeds also degrade over time. Should be planted next season. Older seeds are not as likely to sprout.
Thanks soo much rylaff! Think I can do that.
Hey Molly, if it is passiflora the seeds will be hard and small like the ones I pictured here for you. I have a few dozen species I keep here at the house in Florida. I have raised thousands of seedlings in efforts for passiflora rescue and peoples butterfly gardens. I normally nick the pointed end of the seed with some nail clippers just to help water penetrate the seed. I dotn get into fancy acid, juice and other stuff to "help along". The water does it just fine. I have had seeds kept under slight refridgeration up to 4 years with good success in germination. Seeds may have a shiny coat or may be dull, normally through my experiences the dull coated seeds sat in a decomposing fruit and mold attacked it. BUT the mold seeds still grew. They are a hardy seed. Good luck with yours! Chris
It is my understading that you plant the passifloria seeds ASAP.......they dont have to be dry.
If they do dry out say for a few months...... they will have to be soaked in the juice from another passion fruit or orange juice...for about 24-48 hours.
Dee
Thanks for your help.
Just looked at my seeds, and they look nothing like your's.
Mine are a bit moldy looking, yet they still have red color mixed in with them.
Hmmmm wondering now what's wrong with my seeds?
There are so many different kinds, I wouldn't worry that somethings wrong. I never heard of the juice method-I always just nick and soak mine, then pot them up. I did have some slow germinating ones I ordered from Thompson and Morgan that must've been super dry! I'd have tried the juice on those they were so slow!
