I was watching HGTV today and they had a segment on Hydroponics - Indoor plants using water only, no soil, which I happen do dabble in. I love it because the plants don't need to search for nutrients since you provide it in the water you suppliment. Therefore, all of the energy goes to new blooms and fruit. No fungi or pests to deal with inside the home. You can even grow herbs this way. Anyone else taken a fancy to this? -Robin
Hydroponics - New Forum Topic?
I've been wanting to try it,I actually got a big troth to do it in but since I lack all the pumps and stuff I filled it with dirt and seedlings in it....
No, that's Hydroculture (with the pumps). Hydroponics (from what I've learned) is just putting the plants in water with what ever solid medium you wish, clay pebbles, rocks, etc and keeping them fed with nutrients on a regular basis. I was so happy to see what I can grow this way.
This sounds interesting and I wish you luck. Since we do not use chemical fertilizers I think this leaves me out of this game...dang!
...
I think for the most part its all hydroponics. From what I understand ,if you can't supply oxygen to the plant roots they will die, even if the water has all the nutrients they need ,thats why you need the pumps.....
According to the show I was watching, the clay beads supply the oxygen for most house plants. The examples they used were the Drucina, Lily and Polka Dot plants. With the herb garden, he had them growing with the pump. The pump method is a little more intensive than I'd like to deal with, but I think I'll buy some clay beads and see if it makes a difference in the ones I now have in just water.
Cindy aka will 2358 dabbles in this =)
