What a wonderful close-up! I purchased some seeds from an eBay seller last spring, but they didn't germinate. I wonder if they are the kind of seeds that need to be planted immediately? Thanks for the picture.
This plant is known to be easily propagated by seeds, here in Brasil, but it is susceptible to cool temperatures, beeing indicate to tropics. It blooms in spring and summer; the fruits when dry resemble small baskets. The seeds have to be taken from an open fruit and the soil has to be rich in humus.
Thanks for the further clarification. I'm thinking that the seeds probably need to be planted right away if they need to be taken from an open fruit. So I guess I'll just look for one to purchase. It's such an interesting plant.
Very pretty, ry! I've think I've read that this plant is also called 'pelican plant.' Is that correct? It's such a spectacular plant I just gotta get one for next summer! Thanks for the picture.
It is unusual, isnt it. There is also a vine very similar to it, except the flower is much smaller. I love this one. The blooms are huge, the leaves are a beautiful darker green. This is an incredible plant.
Hello All.
I am thinking of ordering this vine as a plant from Logee's for my yard this spring, just for something different. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it would do well during the summer in a garden in Minneapolis? Would I see any blooms before first frost in October? Any advice anyone could offer would be sincererly appreciated.
Mine bloomed the entire summer in several flushes. This winter , we have had several nights where the temp dropped down below freezing. It took some damage on the very outermost leaves, but is mostly intact. It started blooming in early summer and quit in November.
