Pollinating

How soon after the blooms open are you suppose to polinate them? I collected some pollen form the bloom and have stored it in the frezzer. It's my little Brug Pollen Bank. LOL. My DH got a kick out of that one.

I do mine right away. Make sure your pollen is room temp. after removing from frig. Good luck, there is nothing like seeing it took and is growing a seed pod.

Shoot, I was prying open blooms that were going to be opening that night to pollinate them. I had to - a very dedicated hummingbird moth showed up promptly at sunset every night to get any that I missed!

Best would be to open the brugflower some hours before it will open by itsself. You are shure: No moths are doing a second pollination.

All of my Brugs are inside now but I'm waiting for the pollen that poppysue is sending as I don't have any. My Question is will it be too late to wait for a few days to pollenate after they have already opened. There are still a few that haven't opened yet. I collected the pollen from the one that has opened.

As long as the stigma looks white and fresh, you can pollinate. If the stigma turns to brown - it is too late:-)

At this time of the year, flowers need longer to mature. This goes also for the stigma. Since inside the house you dont have to fear insects doing unwanted pollinations, I would pollinate after the flower begins to open. Because of my short growing season, many of my pollination are made during October in the winterhouse.
