Very nice. Are you going to dig them up and bring them in for the winter or let them die off for the winter.

N. Vernon, IN(Zone 6b)

I won't dig but I will mulch well and cut back the mother to 12 in.

bopjg,
I live in North Florida!!!! Of course, mine are going to be a little thicker. However, I have noticed that the ones in the front of the house dont look nearly as good. They dont get as much water, the roots are not mulched, and the sun hits different. Not to mention that the ones out back are different type than the ones out front. I think that plays into it. I wasnt trying to hurt your feelings. I was thinking yours looked lonely and wanted a friend.

N. Vernon, IN(Zone 6b)

I know you wasnt trying to hurt my feelings. Mine just look so sad. I hope next year thay look better this was the 1st year for her and I got her late spring I'm happy she lived and had pups you should see all the straw I beded her with looks kinda funny I'll try to take pic of it in the morning to show you.
here in IN. we have to try a little harder because of the cold.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Not in zone 6 bopjg so it is inside for the winter and has just begun to bloom. There are lots of pups around it some small some getting quite large so will separate in the spring.

N. Vernon, IN(Zone 6b)

haighr It's really a pretty color I wish it was hardy or better yet wish I had a green house.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks, it is the 'african red', I found if you have a house, I have a greenhouse, so to speak as long as there is room for me and Steve LOL!

N. Vernon, IN(Zone 6b)

I understand that all to well LOL

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I have 2 pups on my banana tree that is in the house now. Could someone please explain to me how to take these pups (next spring)? I've heard that it is difficult. Thanks!

Brinda :)

I got the 'african red' through aloha tropicals - What a great tropical site.

Your not alone with 1 banna tree + pups. I started my "Banna Grove" a year ago - Tree rats ate through all but one - then the one got cut down with a weed wacker. It some how survived and I am so happy - but mine looks like it could use some company. I will add some now that Tree Rats are gone.

My pups are not doing as well as they had been when outside. The ornamental 'African Red' bloomed and then about a week or so ago dropped over so I cut it off. The pups are doing okay, but one also crimped over that was about 3' high.
John sent me a dwarf cavendish that had a bit of green but that now has turned brown. Wish spring would get here soon so I can get them back outside!
Maybe I should ship the pots down to you msail and you could send them back in a few months LOL!!!

We live in Zone 8 and we still mulch up to four feet...
usually putting some of the wire from our tomato cages..around and then filling in with hay, straw, pine needles...anything that will keep these plants happy. After the first frost (and we don't have many) we cut down to where the banana tree is firm and healthy...all those leaves can be used in your compost pile to make everyone happier in the spring....

I have to say, cutting into the stalk or tree part of the trunks does smell very bad...so be warned.

but ours have made about 40 new plants each year...

most nurseries just mulch them up to about four feet...cut off everything above that healthy line...and they do great the next year.

We love them too...

Haighr,

send them down by all means - just don't expect to get them back!!! : )

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL, the way they are looking right now, you wouldn't keep them either! And the same goes for those Ravinia Rivularis palms that I was gonna winterize! They are iced in now!

Frederiksted, VI(Zone 11)

Haighr,

Do you usually get ice before the offical first day of winter?
We are having a very rainy fall.(YEA!!!)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

We often get ice and snow before the official start of winter. This year looks like it will be as bad as last year.
My nana pups are croaking one at a time inside and the dwarf cavindish sent to me by John isn't doing anything either! oh well, maybe in the spring!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

aw the pups are cute. i have never done bananas due to the fact i am allergic to them. my hubby and kids like them but i cant eat them. they sound fun to do though might have to get a pup. pretty african red too.
