Hey chrissy, it is going to be beautiful! Can't wait to see a pic in the spring.

I can see tulips, iris, hyacinth(I think), what else is planted in the bed beside the seeds?

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

thanx lilyfan... i cant wait to see it in bloom either.... i have crocus , daffs, freesia, fitillaria, lilys, scilla, tulips, hyacinths, and irises.. i feel like i am leaving something out!...lol..i have three whiskey barrels near this bed that are full of tulips, irises, hyacinths, and daffs... oh one whiskey barrel is full of glads... and i have a low, long horse troth also full of bulbs.. so in springtime its going to be full of spring bulbs in bloom...it should be a sight...i cant wait!!!! (: I will be sure to post a pic..(:

What a riot of color is coming your way. I have spring fever already! The only thing you grow that I don't have is the Freesia, however mine are scattered all over, no visual impact like yours.
Sue

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

hi sue.. well i wish i could scatter them.. but our gophers eat anything that i love.. so they have to be in some type of container... the area where all these bulbs are planted is near our barn style shed where our BBQ is and my swing and hammock ... i cant wait to lay on that hammock and smell the bunch of hyacinths i have planted.. we have alot of BBQ's in the spring and summer and my family comes over alot to BBQ so it will be a nice atmosphere when we are out there..i want to have different garden beds all around.. i want to have a rose garden , of course i will have areas that have all sorts of mixed flowers and such,.. i just love flowers and gardening.. its so soothing.. and when there is any new growth i get sooo over excited...lol..i do need to build a seed bed.. i just dont have room in here.. not a real big one.. just something i plant easy seeds in... anyway thats the plan so far...(:

Very nice - chrissy - I am going to bookmark this one and remind you for a picture next spring! :-)

You'll be a couple of months ahead of us in NY and it will give me hope. I did some extensive bulb planting - several hundred different ones, so I'm ALREADY ready for Spring!

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

ohhh sbarr, i am jealous... i cant wait to have several hunded bulbs.. i want tons of bulbs.. what i really want to do is.. we have a 660 ft long by 40 ft wide easment.. and i really wanted to just cover that entire area with bulbs.,. now that would be alot of chicken wire (because of the darn gophers!) .. i may have to do it in sections... or do it in raised beds.. i dont know yet...and yes i hope we dont have that long of a winter... it was freeeeezing last night.. it dropped to 48 degrees... BBUURRRRRRR... it was 52 last night while we were outside BBQing and carving pumpkins.. 48 is pretty cold for me considering the coldest we get all winter is about 38 and thats not very offen it mostly stays at 42 ...anyway , i will definetly send pics.. will u post pics of ur bulb garden??? i want to see it when its in bloom!!! (: have a happy day!

It's a deal. Is it Spring yet? Hopefully as the earth warms herself this Spring, as our flowers pop up, so can our pictures. I remember groaning at pictures of flowers from the warmer zones in February and March, but it does give us hope!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

I remember living in SF for about 2 yrs. and I do remember the 'winters'! I'm truly a midwest girl, but I do miss those mild winters.

I'll be right here along with sbarr waiting for those pics of yours when we are still in the throws of winter.

Sue

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

oh sue u lived in SF... well SF gets colder still then we do down here in the desert... we dont get any snow... and we get maybe one super light frost a year, and it only lasts maybe 3 hours... it doesnt frost overnight... i am so not ready for this cold this year.. i hate being cooped up inside... i think its gonna warm up today... i hope so.. we went from 100 degrees on wed. to 60 on thursday....then 52 on friday and here we are at 52 so far today... i hope it at least warms to fall weather.. oh i cant wait till spring!!!! (:

chrissy,

yes I lived in CA. for a couple of years, but I'm back to my roots now. Yes, SF does get some rather chilly weather. I went home for Christmas while we lived there and it was warmer in Minneapolis than it was back in SF.

None the less Southern California is still alot warmer than Southern Iowa!

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

oh i agree with u lilyfan..although i have never been to Iowa..lol.. BUT from what i have heard.. it can get pretty cold there... how cold do u get anyway? and how hot? (humidity and all?) when do ur bulbs start to come up? some of my daffs are already comming up.. although i hear they will be fine for spring...where-abouts in iowa do u live anyway? how big is ur property that u have? u too sbar???? it was warmer today then it has been for a week.. we were at about 70 today.. my sister and i were making wood burt garden signs..(: i hope tomarrow is jsut as warm.. we plan on making our dog pen bigger and putting the signs on a post and putting my sisters other bulbs in a big pot for her.... wish me luck on the weather.. (:

chrissy,
We do live in Iowa and the only constant here is inconsistency! I'd guess our 'average' winter temps are around 10 to 20 degrees. But we have also had weeks where the temps were -20 degrees. Three winters ago (2000) we had 84 inches of snow, really unusual because it was also quite frigid.

Summers also run the extremes. This May and early June we were very cool, 50's and low 60's. August was 100-108 for a couple of weeks. We have a saying here in Iowa and it goes something like this: 'Don't like the weather, just wait a couple of hours and it'll change!

I live in the south central portion of the state about 20 miles north of the Missouri state line.

My lot size is 128 feet wide and 150 feet deep. I also have a small horse pasture on the south side of our yard that is just shy of an acre. Actually I stole 42 feet from the pasture so I would have someplace to put my flower beds!

Sure hope the weather holds for you. I think the last of my flowers will be history after the next night or so. Supposed to get down to the 20's by Fri. night.

Ack! I still have bulbs I need to plant! The tulips have been in the fridge for 6 weeks now. Did you pre-chill yours? You are probably colder out there than I am by the coast. You are right about the gophers though, almost everything but daffodils (they're toxic to gophers!) goes in a container or raised bed with chicken wire underneath.

My South African bulbs are all sprouted, so I gotta get pictures up here. Easy to naturalize in CA: Gladiolus tristus, Lachenalia, Sparaxis, Ferraria.

Looks great!

hi jermainiac
no i didnt put mine in the fridge... and yeah i think our wearther is a little more one the extreme side compaired to irvine... we live in the desert.. so we get cold compaired to u and reaaaallly hot compared to u... but u get humidity more then me i think.. also hyacinths are toxic too...

lilyfan, my goodness 20???? BURRRRRR... i cant stand being cold... they were calling for rain this week.. but have changed it to very little chance of rain.. i dont mind it being chilly outside as long its blue skys and not rain clouds... u know .. anyway i have to get the rest of my sisters bulbs in the ground too.. maybe later today or monday... i just finished he 'HOME SWEET HOME' wood burned sign... i drew a two rail wood fence that leads to a barn... and at the front corner of that fence a weeping willow.. all that burnt on wood.....lol.. anyone ever make their own garden signs...???

Nice job, thanks for sharing! It does give me hope since it will be a couple more weeks here before spring really pops. I have some daffys showing color in the buds, some hyacinth with a few leaves and big buds way down in the middle, crocus in bloom, a maple tree getting ready to leaf out (red), and lilac bush showing some green. Spring IS on the way here! Soon, soon, anytime now. It's really nice to see some green after white all winter.

Looking good!

Hi chrissy, haven't been here for awhile. What a riot of color! Gives me hope that spring is coming our way soon.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

I was telling my little nubs poking out of the ground that they needed to look as colorful as yours.

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

hi lilyfan ..good to see u here.. after these are done blooming i have no idea what i am putting in here till next season but it will be fun to make it pretty after the blooms are done.. i'll prob dig uo the tulips and the ones that need the longer cold times... hey i got a question for u about the oriental lilys , will they still grow and flower if the top that was growing gets broke off???

sbarr, ohh u just now have little nubs.. these were little nubs for me for a while.. and then all of a sudden they just started to bloom.. has anyone ever heard of a hyacinth to continue blooming after the first original flower died off... some of my hyacinths have died off.. the flower anyway then as i go to cut the dead flower off there is another stem comming up withmore flowers on it.. i never knew they could do that.. ok now that u guys got somewhat of an idea of the bed.. now u guys need pretty pics of the flowers close up ...(:

sob...sob...but, at least the snow has completely melted in my yard...

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Chrissy, it doesn't sound too promising for blooms. Hopefully you will still get some stalk growth so the bulb canbe fed for flowering next season.

I do know that if the rabbits get my lilies as they emerge from the soil there won't be any blooms on that stalk.

When the hail came through a couple of years ago it snapped one of my lilies off just 2 leaves above the ground. It didn't flower the next year either, but at least it didn't die!

There was a sea of blue at the foot of my River Birch today. My first crocus were blooming and I don't have a digital to share them :-(
