WooHoooo Me Too I've got a Blooming Brug

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I AM SO EXCITED! I was sitting at the table talking to my DH when I looked up and started yelling "It's Open It's Open Oh My Gosh It's Open" my DH just looked at me all dumbfounded like and said, "what's open". I said My Brug it's open. He said well I guess that's as good as someone delivering a brand new Harley to your front door, Huh?
This is one of the plants that Farizona gave me at our luncheon on Monday with Roadrunner. I am soooo happy. I can't wait for the ones I've been given to show their pretty little faces too.
Thank You so much Farizona.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a thrill!! Congratulations to you! DHs never seem to understand!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh he understands my excitement and he was just comparing it to how he would feel if he was to get a new Harley Davidson. Yep, That's how excited I am. He has been very tollerant of my Brug cuttings all over the place and shares in my excitment when I get new seeds or plants. He is very supportive in my gardening as he knows how happy it makes me. He is a real sweetheart and I love him for it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Please clone him and offer cuttings of him right here.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Congratulations on your first bloom. I think it's so exciting waiting for that first flower to open. What's great is that the excitement gets even better as you get more and more because each bloom will be brand new.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell, It's funny you should say that as folks around here are always asking him to do this or that for them. He doesn't have time to do half the things people ask of him so they are always telling me that I should clone him. So now we have two of his brothers living in close proximity and at least one of them is like his clone. So I just voluteer him when they ask for assistance in doing something that he can't get to.

Congrats Jan. You'll have many more soon.

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

Hi Jan, happy your brug is doing the bloomin' thing. I was no less excited when my first brug opened. I think my family thought I was nuts always checking for the buds and then awaiting the open bloom. But they were in awe when they saw them. Isn't it fun? (Understatement of the day!)

Oh Boy did I enjoy my first bloom this season. Almost the exact same reaction as your DJ, Tomb, though my DH was asking a whole lot of questions to understand :) He appreciated it in his way... I DREAM of a green house where I could keep these year round!!! Not in the forseeable future for us, though...

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

It is truly exciting to see your first bloom but it will also be just as exciting to wait and see others that you have not seen before. That feeling will never go away when anticipating a new bloom.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Way to go!! Every summer I get excited to see mine bloom. I remember my first bloom. Wow!! Thought I had died and gone to heaven. I'm so glad you are excited. I know where I can get rid of some cuttings next fall. LOL!!

Northern California, CA

Morning Jan -

So glad for you....aren't they wonderful?! Did you get a picture for the baby brug album?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, My DH said you better hurry and take a picture. Unfortunately I'm not digital yet so I will have to wait to see how they develope. It is the same as Roadrunners though as we both got them on the same day from Farizona. I have brought most of mine inside now but still have to dig up five that are planted outside. They look good and strong but the temps are dropping and I would sure hate to lose one. I hope that the transplant from ground to pot doesn't put them through too much stress.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I cant wait to get my first brug. Just seeing the pics and reading the forums has me addicted. I keep looking to see if anyone has seeds for me to try. I havnt seen anyone local selling them around here or even having them.
Congrats Jan! I know the feeling of a first bloom and go around telling everybody "LOOK" its here.

For us beginners, can someone address the dormancy issue?
Will brugs begin to go dormant when brought indoors? How long is the dormancy period? Do we water "lightly" during this time?
Since the sudden colder weather, I notice yellowing of a lot of lower leaves. Is this usual?
Sure is a learning experience, and I have learned a lot from reading DG member's notes in the forums here.

Farizona,
Here's a helpful link, I hope you get the answer's you need. Im fairly new too http://www.brugmansias.org/siteindex.html

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Farizona, It is normal for them to drop their leaves this time of year.
If you bring them in and put in a cool dark area they will go dormant. Water lightly just enough to keep them alive when the soil feels dry to avoid root rot.
If kept in a warmer room where there is sun they will keep growing and will need more water. Hope this helps.

Here is a link where you can purchase brugmansia seeds: http://calastropicals.com/module/store/

Calalily is a Dave's Garden subscriber and she has some great seed crosses. She also sells rooted brugmansia cuttings.

You bet your brugies, Brugie. I'm addited now. My house looks like a jungle cause I brought all my Brugs in as the temps are dropping.
Who needs a Christmas tree when you have Brugs in every room. Hehehe
Poppysue is sending me some pollen so I can pollenate my little baby.
None of my cutting have got blooms but they all look very healthy. Maybe they will bloom next year.
Thanks for the offer of the cuttings.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Congratulations. Still waiting to make Brugie a grandma here. The plants are beautiful so perhaps it will be soon. Sigh...

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

Thank you Annabelle, that is a very comprehensive site.
I need to refer to it more.
And thank you, Snowhermit, I was losing some yellowing leaves, thinking I wasn't giving enough fertilizer, or too much water, etc., etc.
