Get your face out of the dirt!

Northern California, CA

Three weeks ago I purchased a 'Peaches and Cream' at the DVC plant sale. Figured I'd put it in, let it settle itself in and start looking for activity come Spring.

I stripped the leaves up a ways so it wouldn't get too soggy and wet in our monsoon season.

And the story continues......

So a couple of days ago I noticed a smallish bud. Then this morning I noticed that it was quite a big bud and had tendrils beginning to uncurl. It's been in the mid 90's here for a week.

And here she is with her face planted smack in the dirt!

There's very little color, just a tinge of yellowy-peach and these images were taken at dusk. I made her sit up and pose for this last shot.

Do you think it really is Peaches and Cream?
My Charles Grimaldis are returning to their early Spring paler yellow less intense coloration also, so I thought maybe it was shorter days or cooler night temps that we had for a week or so when this was first planted.

The bloom is 10 1/2" long.

EEOWW! That's beautiful.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

What more could you want girl? That thing is gorgeous!

Northern California, CA

Oh I do love it, don't get me wrong......but I've never seen Peaches and Cream in person, so I don't know what the color is really supposed to be. I see a lot of variation in the online images of PC.

Happenstance, it might be maya. which would be lucky for you, as it is a divine brug, smells great and is a good bloomer and grower. i'll bump a thread that has them both. at lest i think maya blooms more....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What is DVC Happenstance?

I bought a P & C at a nursery here and everyone here convinced me it was a Maya. Mine looks just like yours. Here is a flower from just tonight. They have become much smaller this flush.

Congrats Candy it's beautiful.

Candy:

Your brug is beautiful and healthy. It knows it has been brought into a wonderful home. :-)

Thanks you guys.....she's still wanting to look at the dirt this morning, no additional color. It's very windy this morning so the bloom is just blasting around in the wind. Seems to be hanging on.

So what's the verdict, think it is P&C?

Have another brug that was double tagged as Charles Grimaldi and "Pink", purchased at the same sale, it has a big bud so I hope it hangs on to reveal its true colors.

Kell, DVC = Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. There's another sale this Sat AM starting at 9:00. Their prices are great. Came away with a whole car full for $52 at the last sale.

She has color! 36 hours into the lifetime of this bloom and here's the color. After being blasted by 30mph winds all night and our first really chilly night (45F), she now has color and fragrance. How can one bloom perfume the whole side yard?

I wonder if it will recurve like mine. Now the question is is mine really Maya.....then yours will be also!

Mine smells like lemony soap.

Northern California, CA

OK Kell....remember I an very new to these, please define recurve.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

See how my petals have bent upwards and in, in my second picture? That is what I call recurve and I think others also do!

Northern California, CA

Thanks Kell.....here's an image of her this AM. A little more color for sure, but I don't see the pronounced upward curvature that I see in your picture.

Forgot to mention that it does definitely have a "fresh soap" aroma, not necessarily lemon but very pleasant.

Drizzly here this am and brrrr chilly, sure it is the same for you.

Mine don't always recurve. I think it has to do with temperature.

I woke up at 5 AM to incredible hail. I thought the roof was going to cave in, it was so loud. I am afraid to look outside. I picked up big stakes after work last night for some huge seedlings with big canopies full of buds. I told my husband we needed to support them for if it rained they would break off. He said "It is not going to rain tonight." Well it poured. I do not even want to go out and look. Woe is me, and just 3 days ago it was in the 80s!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, I hope everything came through okay. Hail can really make a mess of things. Let us know how it goes.

Northern California, CA

Kell....are you there?

I'm almost afraid to ask, but how are all the brugs after their battle with the hail?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

These pics are gorgeous.
Can someone tell me if there is a difference in the bloom colors on the variegated varieties? Well, actually are there more than one variety that comes in a variegated form? I'm fairly new to all these varieties I see here and I'm blown away....I can't wait for next years crop!!!
I have an small 3 year old "Peaches & Cream" in a pot with it's first tiny bloom. It is so hard to wait for it to open!I just thought the the 3 years was a long wait...just a few more days!LOL

Thanks for any info.

There are several variegated brugs now. For some time we thought that Maya and Sunset were the same, but they may not be. There is one in the states that is called White Suaveolens Variegata, known by a different name in Germany, Klerx Variegata, and of course Snowbank, the new patented brug. So with Peaches & Cream, that makes 4, maybe 5 if the first two are not the same. I've seen blooms on several of them and they are all peach colored except for the White Suaveolens Variegata.

Happenstance, that is a very lovely brug, which ever it is. My 4 month old Snowbank has not yet y'd. It is in the greenhouse and looks very healthy, about 36" now. Your is just beautiful.

Kell, I do hope the hail didn't ruin all your plants. I had moved everything i could into the greenhouse a week or so ago as teens temp. predicted. Luckily so far the coldest has been 23 degrees which is too cold. Donna

I hit the DVC plant sale this AM and came home with a bunch of goodies, including a twin sister for my Peahces & Cream......with blooms no less for $3.50.

So here's Peaches II not even in the ground yet.

Oh shoot! I meant to go to that one Happenstance. Oh well......... we spent most of the day buying a new car so i couldn't have gone anyway had I remembered.

The hail was so weird this time of year. Thankfully the plants seem to have survived and the buds are still on as are the pods. I bet we are in for a horrible winter. The leaves on some are really shredded.

Ms. Critterkeeper, I wonder why yours is still small after 3 years. If it is the real P & C I have heard they grow very slowly but 3 years is a long time. Generally, they like to moved up in pot size rapidly. A new seedling can go from a cell pack to a 15 gallon or bigger in one summer usually. Feed! Feed! Feed!

Poor leaves!!

Thumbnail by Kell
Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sure does look like your babies had some uncalled for shredding. That is too bad, but leaves to grow back pretty fast.

My one year old P&C was only 18 inches tall. Actually it was a year and a half old. I couldn't deal with it being so slow, so I gave it away. It has had one bloom in over two years. Not a brug that I would fight to keep going. Maya grows so much faster and has beautiful variegation on it. Pretty much care free unless the bugs attack.

Kell -

That poor pathetic leaf. :(

I remember a couple years ago when we had one of those freak SF Bay influence hail storms here. I had already put a lot of my succulents outside and the damage was tremendous. Hopefully your brugs will have a nice gentle winter to recover from this insult.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Brugie & Kell
I bought mine at the Galveston Tropical treasure sale.It was in a quart size pot.It was the last one and unlabeled. The guy said it was P & C but I didn't think much about it at the time...I was buying begonias:>) It was his last plant.Maybe you can help me get it going better?
BTW:I had a computer crash so I am on hubby's lap top for n0w...I'll post pics & more on it IF i get back up soon.:>(
Ms Critterkeeper

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sorry to hear about the crash. At least you still have something to get you to Daves. I would have to be at the closest computer store buying a new one. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to fix one that crashed. As for helping you with your P&C...I don't think you want my help. I couldn't get mine to grow. If they have good soil and fertilizer along with light and warmth, that is about all you can do to get them going. Good Luck!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well now that it is winter and I assume being in 9A like myself, you get an occasional frost. So you will not really want to feed it alot unless you have a GH. So move it in if it is going to get too cold. If not, wait till the first hint of spring and start feeding it twice a week and make sure you push it up to the next pot size when it is big enough to go. I go from 4 inch to 1 gallon, to 5 gallons to a 15 gallon pot. Brugie covered all the main points!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Brugie& Kell,
Well,I am still on the temp laptop...UHG! It's so small I can hardly type on this...
Thanks for all the help .I dunno what could be the problem with my P & C....I think I'll plant it in the ground this spring and see if it gets any better...Now I want a pink variegated one...LOL
Pray for my puter guys...it doesn't look good.
More soon..
MsCritterkeeper

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will pray for your poor computer and also that you get a variegated pink brug.........but then you have to share it with me! LOL

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Kell, Thanks for the prayers for my puter...we have a new system on order, Yeppie!
You betcha I'll gladly share..do ya know where I can buy one or are they still unavailable here? If I could get one now Maybe it would be bigg enough by spring for cuttings?
Well, keep me posted if you find one...
MsCritterkeeper

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sadly it is not here as far as I know! But we can always hope!!!
