As part of my Quest to have Brugs in bloom before it is a race with the killing frost:
Would it be a good time to start seeds NOW? Thus giving them the most time before setting out in the spring? Or would seedlings produced from seeds planted in the spring (outdoors) soon catch up and out-perform seedlings pampered under lights all winter? I find that to tbe the case with tomatoes...
Thanks,
John
Seed Starting Time?
John, start them now. I started seeds two days ago. Spring planted seeds won't make flower for me if I wait until spring. At the latest, I'd start them in January. JMHO.
S.
A few of us started our seeds in February last year. Tracey got hers blooming within 4 months. I am not so talented! Unfortunately, I waited too long to get them in the ground. However I did find some that I kept in 4 inch pots all summer and did not move up until September have now taken off and have budded at the same time as those that were in the ground in June. They are in 3 to 5 gallon pots. It grew so fast to about 10 feet. It is huge! And so straight. The others are about 4 feet tall and budding. 1 had die back and a sucker is left at about 5 inches. Another has not Yed yet and is only about 2 feet.
I am starting mine right now this year. Or at least a bunch and see how they do.
John, I found that some seedlings I planted the end of Dec. last year were just a few weeks away from bloom when the weather turned cold up here.I think it also depends on the cross because some crosses flowered earlier than others.
Seeds I planted later and planted outside were just Y'ing when the weather turned cold.
Also I think it takes longer for Brug seeds to sprout than it does tomato seeds. Brug seeds are more sporadic and some may sprout in a couple of weeks compared to some that may take weeks to sprout. Also depends on the freshness of the seeds.
I'll be planting mine this week to be sure they will all bloom next summer.
I have already started my brug seeds. Those from last year, never bloomed, nice sized plants. May bloom inside for me this winter. This is usually the way it goes. Need a longer growing season here.
I have also started mine already! First year from seed... I was affraid I was just too anxious! Glad to know Im not!
I started some too. I usually try to put it off until after Christmas - but I couldn't wait!
Thank you all for the great feedback! I am off to soak some seeds!!
I've already planted my seeds, John. I have one more set of seeds yet to plant.
Looks like May and June are going to be very interesting, good luck EVERYONE, and the race is on! I bet we all have some real beauties again next year!
Ok after all this seed talk, I stayed up late peeling seeds here. Now I am soooooooooooooooooo excited! I got some hot seeds from a hot friend! LOL Unfortunately, I do not have a hot place for my hot seeds.
Last year I hung them off my computer screen and they got warm, but this year I have a new screen and it does not get warm. I am trying to figure out where to hang them. I wonder if I laid them on a table and shined a light bulb close to the packets. Do you think that would work?
Pssst Kell... looking at the hot pic with you and your new baby... I was thinkin... just tuck em in your clothes somewhere, next to your hot little bod! LOL
Great idea, if anybody can do it, Kell can!
Kell, I have had good luck taping baggies to sunny windows. :) One year I started ALL my seeds that way! 200 baggies on one window. LOL It was not pretty but it worked.
Oh you guys......LOL. Unfortunately in truth that is me in my fantasy world of 30 years ago..... I am the total opposite. sad but true! LOL
You are so smart Chele. I never would have thought of that myself! Tom is going to kill you!! Mine are double paned, do the still get warm? LOL, off to check.
kell can you do this to Datura's too? What is your advice on starting Datura's from seed....thanks in advance
